In my early twenties, I experienced a peak in physical fitness that I had never known before. Weighing around 120 pounds and dedicating an hour each day to yoga, I finally caught a glimpse of defined abs. I felt powerful, both physically and spiritually. However, I won’t deny that vanity played a role—I relished the beauty I felt radiating from my fit physique. It was the body I had always dreamed of.
But perfection is fleeting. As life grew busier, I neglected my yoga practice and indulged in less nutritious foods. Gradually, the scale tipped back, and the firmness I once had softened. Then, I became a mother, and as many can relate, the journey continued from there.
Fast forward 15 years and about 15 pounds later, I find myself far from that ideal of fitness. After raising two children and being a stay-at-home parent for nearly a decade, I sometimes lament the extra weight and the limited time I have for exercise. Yet, I’ve gained insight through this experience. The body I aspired to in my twenties is now an unrealistic goal as I approach my forties. More importantly, I’ve come to understand that there are far greater priorities than achieving a perfectly sculpted physique.
Even if I returned to my former exercise routine and diet, I wouldn’t regain that same slender figure. My metabolism has changed, and certain areas of my body have permanently shifted. Genetic predisposition runs in my family, often favoring fuller figures. I’ve made peace with my genetics.
Beyond the physical changes, my mindset has also evolved. I recognize that maintaining a healthy lifestyle is essential for my well-being. When I neglect exercise or gain a few pounds, I feel it. It’s not about pursuing an unattainable ideal; it’s about fostering a robust and healthy body.
I want to keep up with my children (and future grandchildren!) without losing my breath. I want the ability to change a lightbulb without risking an injury. I aspire to wake up energized and fill my days with activities I love alongside those I cherish. It’s important for me to have the endurance to enjoy all of life’s blessings and the strength to navigate its challenges.
As long as I’m here, I want to experience life feeling good. I understand that my body will undergo changes beyond my control. Just recently, I sneezed and experienced a little leakage for the first time (guess it’s time to add kegels to my routine!). Menopause is on the horizon, bringing potential health issues that often accompany aging.
So, I commit to rolling out my yoga mat several times a week and hitting the pavement for a few miles. I strive to eat healthily most of the time (but I admit, sometimes a girl just needs her chocolate and salty snacks). I engage in these practices not only to maintain a healthy weight but because this is the only body I will have throughout my lifetime, and I want it to endure. I choose to live not just to survive, but to thrive as best I can.
