In the realm of professions, the Hippocratic Oath is a solemn promise taken by physicians to practice medicine with integrity. Similarly, an elected President recites the Oath of Office before taking on their responsibilities. Yet, when it comes to motherhood, no such formal commitment exists. This void needs to be filled. For us to truly navigate the complexities of motherhood, we must establish a shared understanding, a pledge of sorts. Thus, I present to you… The Motherhood Pledge.
The Motherhood Pledge
I vow to the best of my capabilities and discernment, to uphold this covenant:
- I will honor the discoveries and insights of the mothers who came before me, sharing my knowledge with those who follow, but only if they seek it. Otherwise, I will refrain from unsolicited advice.
- I will take all necessary actions for the well-being of my child. Yet, when she stumbles, I will not react with panic. Instead, I will advise her to brush it off. I will not raise a child who feels entitled to overreact at the slightest discomfort, causing unnecessary distress to others.
- I will not hesitate to admit, “I do not know.” On tough days, I will seek assistance, recognizing that I do not have to bear the burdens of the world alone.
- I will respect the privacy of my fellow mothers. If they choose not to share their secrets, I will not pry; if they confide in me, I will safeguard their trust.
- I will strive to prevent feelings of inadequacy among my peers. If my lunch creations resemble a work of art, I won’t feel pressured to showcase them online. And if my children truly enjoy those gourmet meals, I will clarify that they also had their fair share of Goldfish crackers and soda.
- I will remember my role within the larger community, with particular responsibility to other mothers. If I notice an inch-long hair protruding from another mother’s neck, I will kindly inform her and, if possible, offer my tweezers.
If I adhere to this pledge, may I enjoy a fulfilling life and be embraced by my community, respected during my days and fondly remembered after. May I always strive to uphold the noble traditions of motherhood.
