Dear Future Kids,
As I pen this letter, you’re just a couple of little ones—18 months and 3 years old. Yet, it’s astonishing how adeptly you handle that tablet! You belong to a generation immersed in a world of gadgets and gizmos.
When I was your age, entertainment didn’t come in the form of apps. We thrived without smartphones or constant internet access. Home phones were tethered to the wall, and if we needed to make a call while out, we relied on something called a “pay phone.”
The internet was a distant dream. If we were curious about something, we headed to the library, diving into card catalogs and encyclopedias to find our answers. GPS? Not a chance. We navigated by asking for directions or wrestling with unwieldy paper maps.
I can only imagine what technology will look like when you get older. Perhaps you’ll be so preoccupied with managing a robot uprising that you won’t even have time to read this! But here are some thoughts on growing up in an age of instant gratification:
- Unplug Sometimes: While phones and tablets can be fun, everything is best enjoyed in moderation. You won’t reminisce about that viral video; instead, focus on creating meaningful memories.
- Engage with the World: It’s easy to get lost in screens, even when surrounded by friends. Prioritize real conversations and practice eye contact—it’s irreplaceable.
- Mind Your Manners: Treat others with kindness and respect. A simple “please” or “thank you” can make a significant impact.
- Never Use Anonymity as an Excuse: The internet can be a harsh place, but remember that behind every screen is a real person. Choose your words wisely, whether online or off.
- Advocate for Yourself: Steer clear of toxic online environments, especially those comment sections. Stand up for your beliefs, but recognize which battles are truly worth the fight.
- Be Smart and Safe: Make decisions that will benefit you down the road. Be cautious about what you share online, especially personal photos.
- Embrace Reading: If printed books are still around in your time, cherish them. Find stories that ignite your passion for reading and keep that flame alive.
- Master the Art of Writing: In a world filled with emojis and shorthand, effective communication still matters. Pay attention to grammar and spelling—it makes a difference.
- Discover What Sparks Joy: Delve into your creative side. Spend time on music, art, and surround yourself with friends who lift you up.
- Seek Adventures: Get outside and explore! Don’t settle for just looking at pictures of places—experience them firsthand. Feel the earth beneath your feet and let it remind you of your place in the world.
Though answers may be just a click away, I hope you never lose your curiosity. Life is about experiences, and I hope you embrace every moment. Who knows, maybe by then, teleportation will be the norm!
With all my love,
Mom
