That Magical Night We Embraced Adventure with Our Kids

County fairs may not be the epitome of charm: the heat is stifling, the food is a greasy indulgence that costs an arm and a leg, and you always leave feeling like you’ve rolled in dirt. Not to mention the throngs of people and the endless lines that test your patience. Yet, for kids, the fair is pure magic.

One evening, as we drove past the bustling fairgrounds on our way home, I couldn’t ignore the chorus of excitement from the backseat.

“Please, Mom! Can we go? Look at that ferris wheel!”

“No, sweetie, not tonight. We need to get home and ready for bed. School is tomorrow.”

Usually, visiting the fair before the school year starts would be ideal, but this year it had fallen during the first week of classes. My husband and I are serious about budgeting and typically limit our weeknight activities. We also had family visiting, but with no specific plans for the next evening, a wild idea struck me. Why not say yes to a spontaneous adventure?

And so we did. We decided to embrace the chaos and said yes to a late-night trip to the fair. We let our kids enjoy the rides until 10:30 p.m. on a school night, indulged in overpriced games, and carried our cheesy, oversized prizes through the funhouse filled with twisting stairs and monkey tunnels.

We feasted on gigantic corn dogs and spun sugar, while our youngest ended up covered in fairground dust after an epic inflatable sword fight with his dad. We rode the merry-go-round and the tugboat, marveled at a cannon stunt show, and laughed until our sides hurt on a water ride. We let the kids pull rubber ducks from the water for more prizes, and as the lines dwindled, we stayed far too late.

With a sense of joy, I agreed to every request for junk food and games, and we returned home with stuffed animals, swords, and huge grins. In the backseat, the boys chattered about their adventures while swinging their glowing swords, illuminating the car’s interior. I drove in blissful silence, overwhelmed with happiness at our unexpected adventure.

Once home, we recounted our night before tucking the little one into bed. I let my older child stay up late and skipped bath time. We all crawled into bed, dirty but utterly content. It was genuinely one of the best nights ever.

The next day, the kids went to school with dirty shoes and ride stamps on their arms. They may have looked a bit disheveled, but who could feel sorry for them? Yes, the county fair has its downsides, but for those precious three and a half hours, we were free from worries. The dirt on our shoes and the stuff we carried home didn’t matter; it felt amazing to say yes, and I hope my boys will remember that magical night forever.
