I’m Grateful We Knew About You

For one fleeting weekend, we became a family of four. It was a secret that only existed in our minds, but it was real nonetheless.

The second faint line on the test—yes, it was there. The doctor confirmed it, and I saw it too (you were there). Just a whisper of existence, but undeniably present. You were a flicker of hope.

Those few days were something special, weren’t they? The planning, the dreaming, and even the cautious celebrations. Deep down, we knew it was too early to fully embrace your presence. That faint line could just as easily fade away. Yet, how could we not allow hope to bloom?

The last weekend of summer became our only weekend with you, while your older sibling remained blissfully unaware. I felt both of you at once—a mother of two! One child holding my hand and both securing my heart, and you, the great unknown.

And then, just like that, you were gone.

That final summer weekend—our only time together—was spent at Story Land. It’s fascinating how, in the beginning, we are all partly the stories our parents tell themselves, aren’t we?

In another era, we might never have known you existed. There would have been no early test, no tears of joy or sorrow. But I’m thankful we had that brief glimpse of you.

Our last weekend of summer was perfectly memorable.
