Is It (Really, Really) Warm In Here, Or Is It Just Me?

After spending what felt like an eternity indoors, we finally ventured outside to tackle the overgrown garden and lawn. We worked for hours, filling six bags with yard waste, and it felt so satisfying to see the neighborhood property values rise back to where they belong.

However, come Sunday, every movement was a painful reminder of our hard work. My arms, legs, shoulders, and back were sore—my husband felt the same way. Meanwhile, the kids, who had been right there working alongside us, showed no signs of fatigue.

Today, I woke up and headed to the clinic where I practice medicine. Having survived the initial challenges of perimenopause and the aches from our gardening battle, I was feeling a bit better. Arriving early, I exchanged a few words with one of the medical assistants, who mentioned her adorable 3-year-old son. Naturally, I asked to see a photo, and she eagerly showed me.

Then came the moment that caught me off guard: she inquired whether I had any children or grandchildren. It was the first time anyone had ever asked me about grandchildren. Deep down, I desperately want to be a grandmother someday, and being in my mid-40s certainly puts me in the age bracket for it. I’ll let your imagination wander about the thoughts that flooded my mind in response to that question.

I often remind my kids how much I cherish every stage of life. With each passing year, life becomes richer and more fulfilling. I’ve embraced every hot flash (though I’d prefer if they didn’t return), every gray hair, and even the tired muscles that protest after a lengthy weeding session. I’ve made my peace with the fact that I haven’t been asked for ID in years. I relish this no-drama phase where I refuse to take nonsense from anyone.

However, for the record, please ask me about my kids. When I do have those wonderful grandchildren, I would appreciate a look of surprise and a compliment about how youthful I seem for a grandmother. And don’t forget to turn up the air conditioning!
