Transforming a Child’s Narrative Through Music

The melodies and rhythms we encounter in our early years have a unique ability to shape our self-perception and the choices we make throughout life. These auditory experiences can have lasting impacts.

As a child, I was subjected to unkind words that no one should ever have to endure. The negative messages echoed in my mind, creating a harmful mental playlist: “You don’t belong.” “I wish you were never born.” “No one cares about your thoughts.” Deep down, I knew these sentiments were false, but it felt nearly impossible to silence them amidst the chaos surrounding me. I was just a timid girl, trying to muster the strength to fight back.

Fortunately, there were compassionate souls who recognized my struggle and sought to add uplifting notes to my internal soundtrack. They whispered affirmations when I needed them most, subtly replacing the harsh lyrics with messages of hope: “You will overcome this.” “You are worthy.” “I want to hear your story.”

These were the parents of my friends who took the time to reassure me I could stay over whenever I wished, stocking their pantries with my favorite snacks, even amidst their busy lives. They were aware of my struggles but made space for me, always keeping a stash of cookies and cozy pajamas on hand.

There were also the coaches who inspired me to dig deep and trust in my abilities, encouraging me to push my limits and achieve personal bests. My reserved track coach knew just when to offer a supportive hand on my shoulder, showing me that not all touch was harmful, and that some individuals genuinely cared.

The teachers played a pivotal role as well, encouraging me to express my thoughts and share my voice. There was the drama instructor who recognized my potential and enrolled me in peer counseling, and the history teacher who applauded my courage for questioning local leaders who visited our school.

These mentors shifted the tone of my inner dialogue, weaving together a more positive and encouraging narrative despite the challenges I faced at home. Their random acts of kindness formed a melody of support, allowing me to rise above the circumstances of my upbringing.

While they couldn’t change my situation—only age and escape could do that—they provided me with the essential tool of knowing I was not alone. I had people who genuinely cared, who believed in me, and who helped drown out the negativity that once consumed my thoughts.

I carry their affirmations with me daily. It’s because of them that I keep moving forward.
