A Deeper Look at Recognition in Education: Honoring the Silent Heroes

As another school year wraps up, it’s time to reflect on how we recognize our children’s efforts. Classrooms across the nation are emptied, teachers breathe a sigh of relief, and students revel in the freedom of summer. Yet, before the excitement takes over, many schools hold their annual awards ceremonies. Parents know the drill: a long event where the same few academically gifted students are celebrated repeatedly. Each year, the same familiar names echo through the gymnasium, while other children, seated in silence, watch their peers ascend the stage to collect their trophies and certificates.

The typical awards highlight achievements like spelling bee victories, math test scores, and perfect attendance. But perhaps it’s time to dig deeper—beyond the surface of test scores and grades—to recognize the silent struggles of those who work tirelessly yet remain unacknowledged.

Education standards differ widely across the United States, as do school policies regarding recognition. While some institutions honor students with learning disabilities who strive hard throughout the year, others overlook these individuals entirely. At a previous awards ceremony, I felt a wave of sadness wash over me as I observed the usual students receiving accolades. My heart ached not only for my children but for the many others who, despite their efforts, were left unrecognized. These are the “non-squeaky wheels,” those who may be worn down and discouraged because their hard work goes unnoticed.

Many children with individualized education plans face challenges that require extraordinary effort. They often struggle long into the night to complete assignments, while their peers enjoy leisure time. I know this intimately because my daughter, who has dyslexia, puts in countless hours to grasp concepts that others find straightforward. I’ve seen her determination at just 8 years old, a maturity and resilience that far surpasses what many adults exhibit after a long day.

So, where is the acknowledgment for those with reading disabilities who, despite their frustrations, managed to learn additional sight words or advance in reading levels? What about the children with autism or ADHD who battle internal struggles yet continue to push through? The message we’re sending is crucial: are we telling our kids that only the “smart ones” matter? That effort is meaningless?

It’s time to change the narrative. I’m not advocating for participation trophies in every scenario—playing on a sports team is, after all, its own reward. However, in the educational sphere, we can and should do better in recognizing the efforts of all our children.

We need to look beyond the obvious and celebrate the individual journeys of children who show tremendous grit and determination. Our kids deserve to see that perseverance is valued just as much as academic excellence.
