A Letter to My Soon-to-Be College Freshman Niece

Hey there, sweetheart. First off, I want to say I love you. That’s the most crucial thing to get out of the way. Because I care about you, there are some thoughts I feel compelled to share as you embark on this exciting new chapter of your life. While I don’t pretend to have all the answers, I do have a bit of life experience that might be helpful.

You might think I’m ancient, but I still feel like I’m your age. Seriously, it seems like just yesterday I was in your shoes. Go ahead, roll your eyes if you want—believe me, I did the same thing at your age. I thought I knew everything, but now, looking back, I realize I was often mistaken. It’s called hindsight, and I’ve gained a lot of it over the years. You, on the other hand, are still in the thick of it, and that’s perfectly fine. If you’re even a little aware of that, you’re already ahead of the game. If you disagree, well, that just proves my point further.

So here are the top ten things I really want you to keep in mind:

  1. Mistakes are Part of the Journey: You will mess up—frequently. And that’s a good thing! Learn from your mistakes, grow from them, and then keep going. Just don’t be reckless; no one likes a phony.
  2. Be Authentic: Embrace who you are. If you feel challenged, rise to the occasion—don’t shy away. But if some guy at a party claims you’re his soulmate at first sight, it’s time to make a swift exit. Live your life for yourself. Discovering your identity is a process that takes time and introspection, so don’t rush it.
  3. Stay Engaged: The initial weeks of college are critical for building friendships. I know it may feel like a long time away from home, but trust me, you won’t get a second chance at these early days. Resist the urge to retreat to familiar comforts. Consider leaving your car at home for now. If homesickness hits, fight the impulse to escape. Get involved, meet new folks, and immerse yourself in campus life. You have so much to offer!
  4. Hit the Books: Seriously, prioritize your studies. This isn’t just a walk in the park. I neglected academics for too long, and it took a lot of effort to recover my GPA. Always strive to do your best, and don’t hesitate to reach out for help. Remember, it’s okay to stumble sometimes. Even I flunked Probability and Statistics! So cut yourself some slack now and then.
  5. Explore Your Options: Don’t box yourself in! If you think you’ve already figured out your future career, you’re likely mistaken. Keep your mind open; there are countless opportunities out there, many of which you may not even know exist. Dive into different subjects and experiences. You’ll surprise yourself! Who knows, you might end up being the next successful sommelier (with an annual pay that can skyrocket). Just remember, if you go that route, I expect some kind of kickback!
  6. Have Fun: College is a unique time in your life, so make it memorable! It’s an opportunity to enjoy life and embrace a bit of irresponsibility while blaming it on being a student.
  7. Make Smart Choices: Exercise good judgment. Don’t drink and drive, and never get in a car with someone who does. You’re capable of making wise decisions—trust me on that.
  8. Avoid Toxic People: Especially if they’re attractive. Often, those charming looks hide the worst personalities. You’re stunning; don’t let anyone manipulate you. Be selective about who earns your trust.
  9. Cultivate Female Friendships: Building relationships with other women is essential. They will enhance your college experience in ways you can’t even imagine. Remember, friends support one another.
  10. Stay in Touch with Your Mom: She’s going to miss you more than you can imagine. If you ever feel like heading home after the first week, think twice—she may not have the strength to talk you out of it. You’ll always be her little girl. If you need someone to chat with about feeling homesick, I’m just a call away. But I might tell you to “put your big girl pants on” and stick it out! I’ll even send you a care package with fresh cookies to cheer you up.

Just know, I already miss you, and I’m super proud of you. Oh, and one last thing: always pair yoga pants with a flowy top. You’re welcome.

Stay fabulous, my dear, and remember that this journey is all yours to shape.

XOXO,
Auntie Sarah
