Coming from a family that isn’t exactly known for open dialogue, I realized that holding back communication only breeds frustration. It’s surprising how unexpressed feelings can linger and eventually lead to conflict down the line. Effective communication is arguably the cornerstone of any successful relationship, including friendships. Here are ten invaluable lessons I’ve learned about communicating effectively in marriage:

I often found myself assuming that my husband, Jake, should automatically know what’s on my mind. Spoiler alert: he doesn’t.
