Class Parent Guidelines: A Room Mom’s Perspective

Dear Ambitious Room Moms,

I always admired your ability to stay organized, send out crucial emails weeks ahead of time, create adorable and imaginative gifts for teachers, and throw unforgettable class parties that would go down in history. Then, I became a Room Mom. And, honestly, it didn’t go as planned.

If you want to go the extra mile on your own, be my guest. Feel free to write a personalized version of the 12 Days of Christmas and serenade the teacher while presenting them with 12 thoughtful gifts—just don’t expect me to contribute. I have officially opted out of the “my-gift-is-fancier-than-yours” contest.

When did it become necessary for me to handle craft projects at home for an end-of-the-year gift? Isn’t that part of the Room Mom’s role? I wholeheartedly support showing appreciation for our teachers; they are often underappreciated and their work is incredibly demanding. However, I believe the gifts should reflect our admiration for the teachers, not our personal creativity.

Class gifts seem to focus more on demonstrating creativity than on what would genuinely brighten a teacher’s day or make their life easier. Let’s be real: no one is winning a Crafty Room Mom award here.

I want to give our teacher something they’ll truly appreciate, not something that will end up in a closet or, even worse, the trash, the moment the last student leaves on the final day of school.

Thus, I propose these four straightforward Room Mom Guidelines:

  1. Room Moms should steer clear of Pinterest for the duration of their term.
  2. Room Moms must not ask parents to assemble anything or add to their already busy schedules.
  3. Room Moms should discover what would genuinely delight the teacher by employing one of two methods:
    • Gift Registry/Wish List: Similar to a wedding registry, allow the teacher to create a list at the start of the year. They can mark any items they would love for home or school. Collect funds, choose from the list, and voilà—happy teacher!
    • Survey: Have the teacher complete one of those fun PlayBuzz surveys. After gathering the results, collect money, and the teacher will be thrilled. Done!
  4. Class gift contributions will be collected through a Room Mom website. If you want to spend time on something for the teacher, focus on creating a website. Email the class parents the link and include a “donate” button. Like a Kickstarter campaign, parents can donate any amount, anonymously if they choose. This way, no one feels awkward about contributing. No more collecting cash in envelopes from 7-year-olds or tracking down parents. Plus, nothing gets lost on the way to school! Once the fundraising period is over, use the funds raised and refer back to guideline #3.

Sounds like a solid plan, right? In fact, I might just volunteer to be Room Mom next year.
