Last summer, my eight-year-old son, Liam, attended camp for the very first time. It was his longest stint away from home, and I found myself missing him more than I could have imagined just an hour after dropping him off. That night, I even wandered into his empty room, yearning for a sense of closeness.

As the days rolled on, I sent him a letter each day. The hours dragged, and I eagerly awaited the mailman, hoping for a glimpse of his handwriting. By then, I had conjured up a vivid picture of the letter he might send me.

I envisioned something like this:

Dear Mom,

Thank you for allowing me to go to camp! I’ve learned so many awesome things like how to fish, tie knots, and even care for a horse. Thanks for packing sunscreen; I’ve been on the lake a lot, and it’s been a lifesaver. You always think of everything! I’m also drinking plenty of water since it’s been so hot. See? I do listen to your advice!

The boys in my cabin are really friendly and smart. I’m making friends for life! We’ve been singing camp songs, playing cards, and catching frogs in our spare time. During quiet time, I read that book you sent; great choice!

I’m trying new foods, just like you suggested. You were right—oatmeal with raisins isn’t half bad. And don’t worry, Mom, I’m using my best manners.

Tonight, we’re camping under the stars, and I hope to see some fireflies!

Love you,
Liam
P.S. Tell my brothers I miss them!

The next day, I finally received an actual letter from him. Let’s just say it was a touch more colorful than my imagination:

Dear Mom,

Thanks for the extra underwear; I had a little incident and it got on my shoes, but not my pillow! Camp is fun, and I’m really good at windsurfing and kayaking. I’ve eaten more push-pops than anyone else—23 since Monday! There are two days left, and I think I can break the record of 37. Awesome!

I went horseback riding, and the horse in front of me made three huge messes. Smoke came off the poop. So cool! I dug for worms with my toothbrush, but don’t freak out. The kid in the bottom bunk let me borrow his. He’s safe; I don’t know his name, but he can burp the alphabet like me. There’s a kid named Zack who can burp it backward. I’m working on that.

We put oatmeal in a counselor’s baseball hat. Hilarious! Oatmeal is terrible, even with raisins. I shot a rifle and I’m a great shot. Can we get one when I come home? Oh, and did you know you can light farts on fire? I’ll show you when I get back!

Love,
Liam
xoxo
P.S. Your spaghetti is way better.
P.P.S. Tell my brothers to save up some farts for Saturday!

This summer, I’m sending along a whole book of stamps with him. I can’t wait to see what he writes next!

In summary, what I expected from Liam’s camp experience was a heartfelt letter filled with gratitude and adventure. What I received was a hilarious, candid glimpse into the chaotic yet unforgettable world of camp life. Each letter reminds me of the beauty of childhood, the importance of humor, and the joy of watching him grow.
