I Am More Than Just Your Mom

We’ve all had the eye-opening realization that our parents are not merely authority figures, but actual individuals with their own lives and stories. Perhaps it hit you when you caught them discussing their past escapades or when a relative turned your unsuspecting mom into the life of the party at your graduation celebration, leaving her barely functional the next day.

These moments bring to light the fact that the people we sometimes find embarrassing are, in fact, quite relatable. It got me pondering about how my kids will one day see me—not just as their mother but as a person with a history of my own. Right now, they view me as their superhero, wanting to stick by my side every waking moment. While I absolutely adore and treasure this phase, I can’t help but feel the clock ticking down to that inevitable day when they’ll be too cool to be seen with me. I can only hope that once they survive the tumultuous teen years, they’ll come back around and recognize me as a human being.

To help bridge that gap, I’ve decided to remind them that I’m more than just “Mom.”

Dear kids:

  • Just like I figured out about my own parents, the stork didn’t deliver you. Do the math, please.
  • I might have a few gray hairs, but I can still tear up the dance floor! Who knows what jams I’ll be grooving to when I’m older, but I’ll always have a soft spot for classics like “Baby Got Back.”
  • My reluctance about you heading off to college has roots in my own wild past—like that time I downed a whole bottle of Hawkeye Vodka while cramming for a Philosophy exam. Spoiler alert: It didn’t end well!
  • The magical figures like Santa and the Tooth Fairy share the same handwriting because… well, it’s a family secret.
  • I may say I’m “allergic” to cats, and yes, the radio didn’t stop playing Justin “Beaver” songs because he went to jail. Sometimes, I stretch the truth—just a little—okay?
  • I, too, had my share of secrets growing up. Trust me, 9 times out of 10, my parents found out.
  • Celebrities? Yep, I have crushes on them too, but let’s not get into that unless you read my blog!
  • Chores like laundry, taking out the trash, and algebra? I think they stink as much as you do.

With love, your mom.

This sentiment serves as a gentle reminder that, while being a parent is a big part of my identity, I’m also a woman with my own experiences, aspirations, and quirks. In summary, the journey of motherhood encompasses a wide range of experiences that shape who we are as individuals. It’s essential to embrace both our roles as parents and our identities beyond that.
