Reclaiming My Phone from the Little One

It’s hard to pinpoint exactly when it all started. Maybe it’s a side effect of being the youngest child, constantly dragged along to my older siblings’ activities with nothing to do. Perhaps it stems from those restaurant outings where good behavior is expected, but the stars rarely align. It could also be because my daughter has her own iPod, while my son is glued to the computer, leaving my youngest with no gadgets of his own. Or maybe it’s just impossible to resist those big, pleading eyes.

Whatever the reason, we have a situation at hand that has spiraled out of control: little Max seems to think my phone is his personal plaything. Spoiler alert: it’s not.

This isn’t just about my natural aversion to sharing my belongings; his obsession with my phone is starting to strain our relationship—my phone and me, that is. There was the time he turned it into a flotation device for his toy figures, leading to a $200 replacement. Then there was the incident where he deleted a dozen important emails from my inbox, making it look like I was ignoring people. And let’s not forget the epic meltdown that ensued when I dared to text a friend during a storm. My phone is now filled with more kids’ apps than anything remotely adult-like. Enough is enough. I’m reclaiming my phone.

How Exactly Am I Going to Do This?

It won’t be pretty. I could go cold turkey and brace for days of tantrums while he adjusts to life without my phone, or I could slowly wean him off his tech addiction. I might try to have a rational conversation about why this is necessary, or I could shift the blame elsewhere (“The phone companies have made a new rule; it’s only for grown-ups now!”). Alternatively, I could just delete all the fun apps and play oblivious. Perhaps a blend of all these strategies is the way to go.

Times are changing, Max. I love you dearly, but this phone is mine, and I’m done sharing it with you. Just don’t look at me with those adorable eyes.
