Because I Said So: The Joys and Challenges of Parenting

The little ones are everywhere, enveloping my world. I find myself dedicating nearly 20 hours each day to ensure their survival until tomorrow.

Some days are a breeze: the structured rhythm of school days, the moment my spouse installed baby gates to curb the chaos, or the rare occasion when both the toddler and the four-year-old nap simultaneously.

Then, there are the challenging days: the time my youngest discovered the wonder of the toilet bowl, when my nine-year-old left his homework on his desk at school, or those moments when all I yearn for is a simple shower—only to be left disappointed.

As the sun sinks lower in the sky, my patience dwindles. I shift from being the whimsical Mary Poppins to the wicked Cruella De Vil in the blink of an eye. The barrage of questions escalates, and I find myself tossing out “No” like a pitcher on the first day of the season. “But WHHYYY MOOOMMMYYY?” they plead.

“Because I said so.”

What a preposterous phrase! “Because I said so?” It’s absurd. After investing all this time in nurturing curious minds—reading, playing, and creating—I envision raising thoughtful individuals who will grow into intelligent adults. Yet, my patience frays as the day stretches on, their endless demands seeming to undo all my efforts.

“Because I said so.”

In that moment, they transform into tiny Veruca Salts, demanding things like, “I want an Oompa Loompa NOW!” Instead of explaining the reality that Oompa Loompas are fictional characters, I resort to a simple “No. Because I said so.”

Why? Because I’m exhausted. Because I’m over having to justify every single choice I make to someone who barely reaches my waist. Because I’m too busy or too fed up to comply with every whim the moment it arises.

So for now? The answer is no.
“Because I said so.”

You might have better luck asking again in the morning—unless you keep me up all night.

In summary, parenting can be a rollercoaster of emotions, filled with both delightful and exhausting moments. The phrase “Because I said so” may seem silly, but it’s often the simplest way to maintain sanity amid the chaos.
