Sure, Being an Adult Isn’t All Bad: A Look at Grown-Up Life

The other day, my 9-year-old son, Alex, whined, “It’s not fair! You get to do all the fun stuff because you’re an adult and we’re just kids!” Well, duh, Alex. That’s how this whole thing works. I’m an adult, and you’re a child. Clearly, I’m winning this game.

Honestly, I do enjoy being a grown-up. It’s pretty great—most of the time, anyway. Unless it’s bill day or I have to endure yet another day at work. You know, those pesky adult responsibilities.

But as I watch Alex navigate the not-so-great tween years, I can’t help but think that adulthood is way better than childhood. Just look at all the perks:

  • Eat What You Want: We can indulge in anything from broccoli to chocolate—anytime we choose. Sure, there might be consequences, like avoiding pants that don’t have a good amount of stretchy material.
  • Stay Up Late: Adulting means late nights filled with parties and binge-watching shows—at least that’s the dream. In reality, I often find myself snoozing on the couch, laptop on my lap.
  • Screentime Limitations? Nope! Sure, I stress about how my phone might be frying my brain and worry about being a bad example for my kids, but I’m an enlightened consumer, so that counts for something, right?
  • Work Life: Endless hours of working—whether in an office or at home—just the same tasks repeated over and over. You know, the usual.
  • Making Money: Adulting means earning real cash to pay bills. And then more bills. But hey, also for fun stuff!
  • Driving: I get to drive—usually with a car full of rowdy kids. And then there’s the never-ending checklist of adulting: obeying traffic laws, parking, paying for tickets, buying insurance.
  • Wardrobe Choices: We can wear whatever we like—provided it meets a lengthy list of criteria: not too short, not too long, etc. You get the idea.
  • Swearing: Oh, the freedom to use bad language! Well, except around Grandma or the kids, of course.
  • Enjoying Adult Beverages: Whether to celebrate or just because it’s a day ending in “y,” we can sip on grown-up drinks. And let’s not forget the lessons learned about B vitamins and mixology.
  • Vacation Decisions: When we go on vacation, we make the choices! Just remember to appreciate feedback from the family—especially since they’re the ones sharing the trip with you.
  • Being in Charge: No one can tell us what to do—except for bosses, parents, and politicians. So, really, we’re still just kids trying to take charge.
  • Parenting: Above all, being a parent is the most rewarding job I could ever have. There’s nothing I cherish more than being a mom.

So, after all that, maybe I owe my son a few apologies. Adulting has its challenges, but it’s not so bad after all.
