Dear Unruly Hair,
I understand the struggle of being caught in the middle ground between straight and curly. Your confusion is palpable, yet I have always treated you with care over the years. It’s high time you return the favor and find a way to behave. Can you please choose a direction? Whether it’s straight, curly, or those effortlessly loose beachy waves that, let’s be honest, require a lot of effort to achieve.
While I appreciate a bit of kink in my life, I prefer it not to be in my hair. I apologize for my past mistakes involving dye, teasing, and rough handling, but can’t we move past those days? I’ve been gentle with you lately.
I’ve tried every organic oil imaginable—coconut, Moroccan, avocado—you name it. Unfortunately, you seem unaffected by them, as your flyaways continue to defy all attempts at control. I’ve utilized various straighteners, curling irons, and defrizzers, along with countless lotions and potions promising miraculous results. The only miracle I’ve experienced is the excuse to linger in the shower a few minutes longer, daydreaming about how fabulous we could look together as we saunter into a store, hair flowing effortlessly behind me. But alas, you seem to repel any notion of a miracle, as if you have an aversion to expensive products.
I know you have the potential to be silky smooth; I’ve seen it after a good blowout that makes my muscles feel like jelly. However, that glamour lasts only moments before you transform into a chaotic, traffic cone-shaped Brillo pad the second I step outside.
I realize I shouldn’t even attempt to style you when the weather is anything less than perfect—mist, rain, humidity, or even a gentle breeze from the Pacific Northwest. Yet, I persist. You seem to constantly give me the cold shoulder, much to my frustration.
The finger-combing technique that’s supposed to work wonders? It does not. Instead, it leaves me looking like I just had a wild night out, which is not the impression I want to convey.
It would be wonderful to swim without emerging looking like a Muppet; no hat is large enough to disguise this mess. If I forget a hair tie, it’s a sure sign that our outing is cut short.
I’ve slept with rollers the size of soda cans, experimented with dry shampoo, and even ventured into the realm of pomade. Yet, on the rare occasion you look decent—like last week when I was home sick—you choose that moment to shine when no one is around. What I wouldn’t give for you to look that good during a night out with friends or even a quick trip to the grocery store.
The burns on my neck are from my fancy curling wand, purchased with the hope that I could entice the waves from you. The saying “it hurts to be beautiful” holds true; a special license should be required for operating such tools. Despite owning a high-end hair dryer with a diffuser, you remain indifferent to my efforts.
I would like to say I’m out of patience when it comes to you, but the truth is, I can’t seem to give up. Please, I implore you, settle down. You are not meant to look unruly all the time—you’re not pubic hair!
Are you attempting to remind me of the chaos in my life? Because if so, you are succeeding. Every time I catch my reflection, I’m reminded of the disorder that surrounds me. I can’t help but think that if we could get you under control, maybe others would think I have it all together.
Until then, I’ll be waiting for the day when the “I just touched an electric fence” look becomes trendy. However, at this point in my life, I’m afraid that day may never come. So please, let’s work together.
Sincerely,
Clara with the Unmanageable Hair
