These Are the Moms I Admire

In parenting, the cardinal rule is to avoid comparisons. Yet, as mothers, it’s nearly impossible not to evaluate ourselves against others, especially given the amount of time spent around fellow parents and their children. I often find myself asking, “Is she simply a better mom, or does she have more manageable kids?”

Deep down, I understand the answer. Every child presents unique challenges, and I strive to do my best. However, it can be tough when our children’s behavior reflects back on us. If my child is acting out, does that mean I’m failing as a parent?

My children certainly have their moments of wildness, which leads me to ponder the lives of other moms. Here are the types of moms I sometimes wish I could swap places with, if only for a day:

  1. Moms Whose Kids Sit in Shopping Carts
The grocery store practically hands us a golden opportunity with their adorable race car carts. It feels like a dream come true. But my kids turn me into a human wrecking ball as I navigate the store with my little one screaming and attempting to escape the straps while the older one decides to jump out entirely. As I watch another mom glide by with her child happily steering their cart, I can’t help but feel a pang of envy.
  2. Moms Whose Kids Hold Hands While Walking
At around 4½, my son decided that holding hands was a thing of the past. Crossing the street turned into a wrestling match, and I often find myself wishing for a leash. Even when he does hold my hand, it’s a wiggly, uncertain affair while I see other moms walking peacefully with their children. As we pass them, my son exclaims, “Look, Mom, they’re being safe,” and I can only roll my eyes.
  3. Moms Whose Kids Brush Their Hair and Teeth
Ever tried to convince a child to brush their teeth? It’s akin to trying to tame a wild beast. No amount of enticing flavors or superhero endorsements will do. Even a fun hairbrush seems like medieval torture to them. I sometimes wonder if a visit to the salon will ever occur again without adult beverages being served.
  4. Moms Whose Kids Eat Varied Foods
I get it; pickiness is part of childhood. Yet, it’s disheartening to see my child turn away from anything that isn’t cheese pizza or toast. I’ve tried blending nutritious foods into fancy snacks, yet he remains unimpressed, inspecting every morsel like a food critic. I admire those whose children seem to eat anything without fuss.
  5. Moms Whose Kids Leave Places Without Causing a Scene
When it’s time to leave, my kids act as if I’m dragging them away from a theme park. The chaos that ensues can draw the attention of onlookers, and I often find myself wishing I had just stayed home. As I remind them of our earlier conversations about behavior, I can only shake my head at their antics.

These challenges were unforeseen before motherhood. Simple tasks like sitting still or eating can turn into battles. Yet, in these moments of frustration, my children also know how to melt my heart with a well-timed hug or a flower picked from the yard. While I may envy moms whose kids seem more chill, I’ve come to appreciate the delightful chaos of parenthood, finding joy in the unpredictability of my children’s antics.

In summary, while there are plenty of things I never imagined would be part of motherhood, I’ve learned to embrace the delightful chaos, enjoy the unexpected moments, and cherish the laughter that comes with raising my children.
