An Apology to My Second Child

Dear Second Child,

As your arrival approached, I found myself reminiscing with family and friends about the joys of parenthood. I had convinced myself that welcoming a second child would lead me into a reclusive phase, but instead, we quickly adapted to our new normal. Though it was challenging, we managed to leave the house—not without a few bumps, though.

At just 11 months old, I realize that I have raised you in a way that is quite different from your older sibling. This letter serves as an early apology, a way for you to understand that I am aware of my shortcomings. Know that my love for you is immense.

My Apologies

First and foremost, I apologize for dropping you. Yes, it happened. You were peacefully sleeping on my chest when you rolled off and landed with a thud. It was a crowded bed, with your father and your sibling vying for space. I was beyond exhausted from late-night feedings. I briefly considered a protective suit for you, but we ultimately opted for a larger bed.

I also apologize for not knowing as many facts about you as I do for your brother. His baby book is filled with every detail, while yours is more like a blank canvas. Just today, I walked in on you using a Swiffer to help balance yourself while standing. It was a remarkable moment, and I wish I had documented it. Your book will read, “Insert photo here,” because I was too busy cherishing you.

I’m sorry for the times your brother has unintentionally caused you trouble. He once accidentally peed on you in the bath, specifically on your arm. It seems he doesn’t always notice you’re there! He often forgets you exist, running right into you or snatching toys from your hands. Yet, you find joy in his antics and follow him around despite the mishaps. I do my best to correct his behavior and encourage affection between you two. Perhaps one day, you will be great friends.

I apologize for your wardrobe choices. Your brother had a closet full of new clothes, while you mostly wear his hand-me-downs. Getting two children ready is a challenge, and sometimes you end up looking a bit disheveled. If “hobo baby” becomes a trend, you will surely set the standard! However, remember that it’s not the clothes that define you, but your joyful spirit.

Lastly, I must assure you that my love for you is as strong as it is for your brother. There’s a common myth that a second child receives less love, but that’s simply not true. From the moment you entered my life, my heart expanded to accommodate the love I feel for you.

I may have dropped you, neglected to document your milestones, and dressed you in less-than-fashionable outfits, but I have loved you fiercely every step of the way. There will never be an apology for that.

With all my love,
Mom
