On the very first day of my freshman year at college, I had no inkling that two incredible women would forever alter the trajectory of my life. One was a quick-witted firecracker in my major, while the other was, well, another quick-witted firecracker who moved in right across the hall.

As the months passed, we formed an unbreakable bond, navigating the ups and downs of our first taste of independence and sharing a mutual disdain for those dreadful Catholic school uniforms. Our late-night escapades filled with laughter solidified our friendship, and now, two decades later, we’re still inseparable.

These remarkable ladies have thrived in their careers and blossomed into wonderful moms. Though our meet-ups are fewer than I’d like, they remain my ride-or-dies. They are the ones I’d reach out to in the middle of the night for family emergencies, and let’s be real, they’d probably be right there with me if I ever found myself behind bars.

My heart is forever marked by their presence, and over the years, they have shown me what genuine friendship truly means—not in a sentimental, cheesy way, but in a real, raw manner.

They’re the kind of friends who embrace all my quirks. When I call them from my closet on my toughest parenting days, they don’t shy away. Instead, they respond with, “Girl, same here,” when I confess that some days, I just need a break from my kids. Our love knows no conditions, and I hope they feel the same about me.

Just like couples renewing their vows after decades together, I believe friendships deserve a renewal of their own. After all, while relationships with guys might come and go, the bonds with your girlfriends? They endure through thick and thin, standing the test of time.

So, here’s my pledge to my college BFFs and all the amazing friends I’ve gathered along my journey:

  • I’ll never judge you for admitting your kids can be little monsters—because honestly, they can be.
  • I promise never to throw a party where you have to buy overpriced jewelry, leggings, or any other nonsense in my living room.
  • If you’re having a rough day, I’ll always offer you a glass of wine. And if it happens to be 9 a.m. and you want to day drink? I’ll join you, so you don’t feel weird about it.
  • I’ll dislike your husband when you’re mad at him, but I’ll also be the first to welcome him back when you’ve made up.
  • When you ask me if a new outfit flatters you, I’ll give you my honest opinion, and I expect the same in return.
  • If you’re facing a loss, I’ll show up with plenty of food and handle your laundry, staying up late to be your shoulder to cry on. Whatever you need, I’m here.
  • I know that our conversations may sometimes consist of silly memes sent in the middle of a busy day, and that’s perfectly okay.
  • Your secrets are safe with me. That night you got too tipsy and ended up in the bushes (and yes, on your clothes), stays between us.
  • If I hear anyone talking smack about you, I’ll step in and set the record straight. Nobody gets to talk trash about my friends.
  • I’ll do my share of the carpooling, even if I show up late in my pajamas, ready to haul your kids off to soccer practice.
  • I promise to keep it real, even if you call me to tell me about the embarrassing stuff—like the time your farts could clear a room or the unfortunate sneeze that didn’t go as planned. I’ve been there, and I get it.
  • If you have a passion or a dream job, share it with me. I’ll be your biggest cheerleader and help however I can. Just consider me the Gayle to your Oprah.
  • I’ll gently remind you when you’re heading down a path that may lead to trouble, and I’ll understand if you initially get mad at me for sticking my nose in.
  • When we have our disagreements, I’ll strive to see your perspective—even if that means admitting I was wrong. And I’ll always apologize sincerely if I’ve hurt you.
  • I’ll love you through your mistakes and remind you that they don’t define who you are.
  • I’ll help you reconnect with the carefree girl you used to be before life got complicated, and I’ll support you in finding that spirit again.
  • I’ll never forget that you’ve played a pivotal role in shaping the person I am today.
  • I’ll always cherish our friendship, proudly calling you my friend. And I’ll be here with a hug, a beer, or a Band-Aid, whatever you need. Our memories and secrets are sacred, just like true friends should be.
