A while back, I shared some of the more difficult experiences that come with raising a toddler. It seems there are even more challenges that make this phase less than enjoyable. This is turning into a series, so here are six additional struggles:
-
Showers
Have you ever attempted to shave while your little one rummages through the bathroom drawers, somehow discovering your grooming scissors and making a beeline for the door? That’s the reality of showering with a toddler awake. It’s nearly impossible. Not only is there a risk of accidental cuts, but you’ll emerge from your shower to a scene of utter chaos. Picture toilet paper strewn everywhere and all your toothbrushes mysteriously vanished. Toddler fascination with dental hygiene tools is a real thing! Get dressed quickly; you never know where your toddler has wandered off or what mischief they’ve found in your brief absence. -
Potty Time
It only took two children for me to realize that privacy in the bathroom is a lost cause. No matter how stealthy my exit, my toddler always seems to find me. I can’t count the number of times I’ve found myself in an intense stare-down with my child while trying to take care of business, pondering why anyone would choose to hang out in a bathroom at such an awkward moment. Honestly, I would rather endure a marathon of shudders kid shows while eating those dreaded toddler raviolis. -
Crayons
Oh, Crayola, you’ve become the bane of my existence. If you know a toddler, you’ve likely seen at least one wall in their home “enhanced” with crayon art. And no matter how many times you think you’ve tucked away all the crayons, there’s always one sneaky crayon lurking, just waiting for your child to uncover it and unleash creative chaos on your walls. Accept this now and stock up on Magic Erasers; you’ll need them. -
Sleep
A good night’s sleep becomes as elusive as a mythical creature when you have kids. With newborns, sleep is a distant memory; with toddlers, you must remain vigilant. Once they master the art of escaping their crib, your peaceful evenings vanish. Nap times are equally precarious as toddlers can open doors and wander off. Ensure your home is childproofed to the max—you never know when your little one might surprise you by hovering over you in the middle of the night, breathing heavily and poking your eyes. -
Eating
Sharing might be a nice sentiment, but it’s a real struggle with a toddler. I’d prefer to enjoy my sandwich without having to hide in a closet munching on a Big Mac, fearing a toddler meltdown if I don’t share every last bite. How is it that my child has super hearing when I open a candy wrapper but suddenly becomes deaf to my requests to keep dinner on the table? Eating in peace becomes a rare luxury that only occurs when the toddler is asleep. -
Cleaning
What’s the point of cleaning? It feels as though the moment you tidy up one area, another mess appears. You clean one spill, only to turn around and find the previous mess has reappeared, often worse than before. And just when you think you’ve put away the laundry, your toddler might decide that throwing clothes is a fun game. To save time, consider leaving your vacuum plugged in at all times; it will come in handy for the inevitable Goldfish crumbs that accumulate on your carpet.
Trust me; there’s much more to discuss. Stay tuned!
