Have you ever spent sleepless nights, tears streaming down your face at the thought of having to leave your newborn child? I have. This anguish isn’t limited to a few isolated incidents but spans years of distress.
Have you ever held your breath in a store as your credit card is scanned, praying it won’t be declined? I have. Unfortunately, it was.
Have you ever stood helplessly at your window, holding a baby while watching your vehicle being repossessed? I have. At that moment, I would have crossed any obstacle to provide for my family and reclaim what was lost.
Have you ever fought relentlessly for your marriage, unsure if it could survive another financial blow? Have you ever felt the weight of emotional exhaustion from being away from your child? I have. There were times when I questioned how we persevered, but here we are, still standing together.
Have you ever snuck into your children’s rooms to take from their piggy banks just to afford groceries for the week? I have. It was one of the most humbling experiences of my life.
Have you ever left a daycare center, feeling as if a thousand daggers were piercing your heart as you heard your child crying for you? I have. It’s a pain I wouldn’t wish on anyone.
Have you ever dreaded checking your mailbox, anticipating yet another bill or late fee? I have. And yes, things were taken from us, utilities were shut off.
Have you ever felt that living in one of the wealthiest nations, as a working parent, is an insult? I have. But now, I refuse to accept this unacceptable reality.
I will not stay silent. I will not watch families crumble under financial strain. Many of you may share similar experiences, and to that, I say it’s time for change.
We live in a powerful country, yet we are the only industrialized nation that does not offer paid parental leave for working parents. As U.S. Secretary of Labor, Marcus Hale, aptly stated, “We’re forcing individuals to choose between their family and their job. No other country makes such choices.”
Am I aiming for the impossible? Perhaps. Am I a bit unconventional? Certainly. But I believe that one day we can say, “We believed we could—and we did.”
