Last week, my youngest child began preschool. In just under two months, he will celebrate his third birthday. Recently, he transitioned to a big-boy bed and has proudly donned big-boy underwear. These significant milestones indicate that my time referring to him as a toddler is rapidly drawing to a close.

While we still have many tantrums ahead (or so my oldest child insists), simply reaching the age of three, starting school, and mastering potty training do not instantaneously transform him into a big kid—despite his enthusiastic assertions to the contrary. Nevertheless, I can sense the magical yet chaotic era of toddlerhood slipping away.

When my first child entered this stage, I was completely overwhelmed. The intensity of the tantrums and the demands of that period nearly drove me to my breaking point. Fast forward five years, and I now find myself reflecting on this unique and often taxing phase with a sense of nostalgia. Yes, tantrums are a constant, but many of the delightful aspects of toddlerhood are fleeting. And oh, how I will truly miss those endearing toddler traits.

The Cuddly Factor

If you haven’t experienced a toddler’s hug, you haven’t truly been embraced. Those little bodies, still marked by baby fat, offer the most comforting hugs after a long day—or at any time, really.

Pure Love

Yes, the clinginess can be tiring, and carrying him around can be exhausting. However, toddler love is genuine and palpable. It’s a love you can see and feel, a fierce emotion that fills the air.

The Comfort of a Little One

Though I don’t always want him on my hip, there are times—like in crowded places or when we need to rush—that it feels essential to hold him close. That feeling of connection when he rests his head on my shoulder is irreplaceable.

Adorable Mispronunciations

Just last week, he excitedly asked to “waffle” something in my ear. Moments like these are treasures I will miss dearly.

Expressions of Affection

He adores my clothing and jewelry, showering me with compliments that come straight from his heart. His sincere “I love you” after calling me “Mommy” fills me with sweetness.

Unfiltered Honesty

Toddlers tend to be refreshingly honest. When you ask them a question, you receive an immediate and straightforward answer. This candor eliminates the need for late-night worry over hidden truths, although it may lead to sleepless nights spent trying to keep them in bed.

A World of Wonder

Every experience is new and exhilarating for him. Whether it’s spotting a train or visiting the county fair, each outing is like the first time all over again. Witnessing his awe at the changing seasons or the first flower of spring is a reminder of the beauty in everyday life.

These delightful aspects of toddlerhood won’t vanish overnight. He may still wake up on his third birthday and try to waffle in my ear, but gradually, these endearing traits will evolve. Experience has taught me that he will outgrow his baby fat and that our love will mature into something equally beautiful.

In summary, while the challenges of toddlerhood are undeniable, the joys and unique qualities of this stage are equally significant. The memories created during these formative years will last a lifetime—even if the tantrums remain a permanent feature.
