The Experience of the Early Rising Parent

It’s currently 7:23 AM, and I’ve already been awake for one hour and eight minutes. On a Saturday, no less. In our household, early morning awakenings before 7 AM are strictly prohibited, yet here I am, experiencing them despite the fact that no one in their right mind would want to interact with me while the clock still shows a six.

So, I find myself one hour and ten minutes into this day, wishing for an immediate end so I can retreat back to bed. But since that’s not an option, here’s how I plan to fill my time instead:

  1. Expressing my frustration. It’s perfectly normal to grieve the peaceful mornings that seem forever lost.
  2. Estimating the resale value of my kids on eBay, conveniently leaving out the ‘early risers’ aspect.
  3. Resenting my neighbors whose homes are still cloaked in darkness.
  4. Wishing I hadn’t indulged in ‘just one more’ episode of my favorite series the night before.
  5. Scrolling through social media to connect with fellow sleep-deprived parents.
  6. Creating elaborate plans, reward charts, and incentive strategies to keep the kids in bed until 7:00 AM (which will inevitably be abandoned by next weekend when they fail, leading me to start this tedious cycle all over again).
  7. Eating breakfast, knowing it means I’ll be serving lunch by 10:30 AM.
  8. Composing a message to a toy manufacturer about their toddler clock, which has proven ineffective. My child figured out how to ‘bring the sun up’ on just the second day; now, the sun appears randomly at 4:00 AM, 5:00 AM, and 6:00 AM.
  9. Dreaming of all the productive tasks I could accomplish … if only I weren’t so incredibly tired.
  10. Nodding off repeatedly throughout the day.

Catch you all tomorrow at 6:00 AM!
