When I discovered I was expecting just days before my forty-third birthday, I was filled with both surprise and joy. My daughters, ages 16 and 11, had been a significant part of my life, and I had yearned for another pregnancy since they were young. After a year and a half of trying to conceive my second child with no medical explanation for the delay, I had almost given up hope. Eventually, we decided to expand our family by adopting a three-year-old boy from Russia, whom we named Alex. The transition to life with Alex was challenging, and it took time for everyone to adjust.

Just after Alex’s eighth birthday, I received the unexpected news of my latest pregnancy. The whole family was overjoyed—except for Alex. While some of us shed tears of happiness, he expressed his sadness and fear. My partner and I reassured him of our love and his vital role in our family, especially concerning the baby who would look up to him. Yet, despite five years in our family, Alex felt insecure about his place, believing this new arrival would threaten his standing.

Over time, Alex began to embrace the idea of a little brother—someone he could guide and help to balance the family dynamic. However, he was not prepared for the news that I was expecting a girl. His reaction was even more intense than before; he secluded himself outside, crying in anger. I tried to comfort him by recalling his best friend, a girl who shared his interests in army games, cars, and physical play. I wasn’t sure if my words truly helped.

While the rest of the family excitedly planned for our new miracle, Alex remained in denial. Then came the day when Lily was born. She was so fragile and dependent, and Alex instantly fell in love. He held her delicately, examined her features, and mirrored how my partner let her sleep on his chest. He proudly introduced her to his teacher and classmates. One day, while I was tending to the crying infant, Alex softly told her, “You know what’s really sad? When I was a baby like you, nobody took care of me like this.” His words were filled with tenderness, revealing a realization about the neglect he had experienced.

This moment transformed Alex’s perspective on me as a mother. He witnessed my dedication to Lily’s care, being there for all her needs around the clock. On one of my first nights home, he wanted to sleep close by so he could hear my “sweet voice” and see Lily’s “cute little face.” He was absorbing what he had missed as a baby himself.

Before Lily’s arrival, Alex often felt like an outsider in our family. He recognized that he had missed our initial family experiences and his early years. However, with Lily, he was present from the very beginning—sharing in the excitement of her arrival and becoming a constant in her life. She knows no existence without him, and for her, he is simply her brother.

As Lily grew into a toddler, their sibling relationship evolved into a more typical dynamic. She annoys him, he teases her, and they often get into disagreements. Nevertheless, she still idolizes him and seeks his attention, while he, of course, continues to love her. The gifts of their relationship are still unfolding. Alex faced hyperactivity and sensory issues as a child, which felt foreign to me. Although Lily is not biologically related to him, she exhibits similar challenges, perhaps even more pronounced. Alex prepared me for occupational therapy, extreme fatigue, and acceptance of traits that I initially struggled to understand. Now that I have a child who shares these characteristics, Alex’s traits no longer seem alien to me; they feel familiar.

It’s fascinating how life unfolds. A little boy entered our lives, imparting lessons to us all, and then a little girl followed, making those lessons more manageable. It is just one love story among many in our family’s journey.
