Supermom and That Infamous Silica Gel Packet

It was just another typical Friday evening. After a long day at work, I returned home to find my partner, a dedicated stay-at-home dad, looking understandably drained from caring for our energetic toddler. As soon as I unloaded the groceries, he announced he was off to take a much-needed nap.

In true supermom fashion, I had anticipated this scenario and purchased a rotisserie chicken from the store, despite my partner’s frequent reminders about seeking organic options. Tonight, we were indulging in some antibiotic-laden poultry!

Dressed in my Wonder Woman pajamas, I served up the hastily prepared meal while my son devoured his Costco chicken, buttery croissant, and organic Fuji apple. Meanwhile, I noticed a growing pile of items on the kitchen table. Ah yes, the picture frames I had ordered for his school photos! I decided to multitask and frame the photos while he enjoyed his dinner. A true testament to my multitasking abilities and motherhood, I thought, even if it meant serving him processed chicken.

With my partner snoozing in the bedroom, my son happily munched away. I was busy putting the photos into their frames when nature called—I needed to use the restroom. I moved my son’s food out of his reach and instructed him to finish what was in his mouth to prevent any choking incidents while I was gone. Supermom to the rescue!

I dashed to the restroom, completed my task quickly, and returned in less than two minutes. To my horror, I found my little one surrounded by the remnants of the picture frame packaging. How on earth did he reach those?

He was attempting to hand me something, which I initially thought was just a piece of cardboard. As I reached for it, he proudly exclaimed, “I ate it.” In that moment, I realized he was holding one of those silica gel desiccant packets clearly marked with “DO NOT EAT.”

I snatched it from his hand and checked for moisture. Thankfully, it was dry. I asked him if he had actually put it in his mouth, to which he confidently replied, “Yes, I ate it.” That’s when I noticed the empty packet, its corner missing and dampened with saliva, along with a few beads scattered on the table. Instantly, I felt an adrenaline rush that could wake the dead. Panic set in as I called for my partner, desperately searching my son’s mouth for any remaining pellets and attempting to unbuckle him from his booster seat.

Finally, my partner woke up, likely startled by my frantic energy. I rushed into the bedroom, flipping on the lights, and informed him of the situation. In a whirlwind, I grabbed my partner’s phone, as mine was nowhere to be found. Luckily, he had Poison Control saved in his contacts.

To my relief, the call was answered promptly. A calm and professional voice reassured me, “This is a common call. Your child is fine, I promise.” The representative explained that the warning on the packet was primarily due to choking hazards, and the pellets themselves were harmless. As long as my son was breathing normally, there was no cause for concern.

After concluding the call, the tension in the room dissipated. I relayed the information to my partner, but as I placed the phone down, I succumbed to an emotional overflow, bursting into tears. The gravity of the situation hit me hard; he very well could have choked or been in danger.

To my dismay, my little one had started picking up the beads from the floor and trying to eat them. We quickly cleared his mouth and took him out of the room while we cleaned up the mess. My partner took a moment to console me, reminding me that he was never truly in danger. “He’s fine. I’ll handle the laundry. Just try not to lose it while I’m gone,” he said.

In retrospect, it was just another Friday night. I’ve managed to navigate countless challenges with my son, and perhaps I am deserving of my Wonder Woman pajamas after all. But seriously, that silica gel packet? Not so much.
