As a dedicated soccer mom, I share a unique bond with my fellow sports moms. My sister-in-law is all about football, my neighbor is a lacrosse fanatic, and my child’s preschool teacher is a cheerleading enthusiast. What unites us? We’re all a little crazy—let’s be honest, we’re completely bonkers. If you’re reading this while watching your child tumble in gymnastics, you probably know what I mean. Don’t believe it? Here are five reasons that prove sports moms are undeniably over the edge.
1. The Costs
Participating in sports can break the bank. Between coaching fees, uniforms, and tournament costs, the expenses pile up quickly. “Wait, I have to shell out $70 for a team-colored soccer bag from a vendor three hours away, and then pay for little Sarah’s name to be embroidered on it?” Seriously? Yet we still pull out our wallets. “Alright, Sarah, hop in! We’ve got to rush there before they close.”
2. The Time Drain
My child’s team practices twice a week and has games every weekend. Many nights I find myself tossing snacks at a hyper toddler while he’s glued to surprise egg videos on the sidelines, counting down the minutes until I can escape. I often ponder all the things I’d rather be doing—like, you know, laundry.
3. The Travel
Next week, we’re off to a tournament out of town. That’s right—our family of five, who hasn’t had a real vacation in years, is packing up for a soccer event. Who needs a beach getaway when you can cram into one hotel room and attempt to get three kids to sleep at the same time?
4. The Spectators
Nothing ignites a parent’s fury like criticism directed at their child. Whether it’s from referees or other parents, the truth can be hard to swallow. I’ve seen parents confront teenage referees, engage in sideline brawls, and even harass a young goalkeeper to tears. Thankfully, I don’t associate with these types, but they do exist. These parents are like unicorns—mythical yet far more common than we’d like to admit. Being a sports parent means drinking the Kool-Aid, but some of them spike it with a dose of insanity.
5. The Injuries
Kids can get hurt just sitting around the house—my four-year-old once injured himself while eating raspberries (seriously, watch out for those!). With the hours spent on the field, injuries are inevitable. So why do we keep putting our kids in potentially dangerous situations? Because they love it. Their passion for the game pulls us into this whirlwind. It all starts with those adorable little cleats or a sparkly new leotard, and before you know it, we’re diving headfirst into the madness. You won’t even realize how deep you are until you’re sweating in the sun with a newborn at a tournament, questioning your sanity. And you’d be right—sports moms are indeed a little loco.

In summary, sports moms may seem a bit out there, but our dedication comes from our children’s love for their activities. We invest our time, money, and energy because we want to see our kids thrive—even when it feels a little bit crazy.
