In a heartwarming display of determination, NHL player Jake Thompson ensured a little girl received a puck that was meant just for her. During warm-ups before an Eastern Conference playoff game against the New York Rangers, Thompson spotted a young fan and decided to throw her a puck. However, it took him three tries to successfully get it into her hands, as a man standing nearby kept handing the pucks to the boys around her instead.
Six-year-old Lily Harper was attending her first-ever playoff game and was ecstatic to be standing by the glass when Thompson threw a puck her way. Unfortunately, a spectator behind her intercepted the puck and passed it to one of the boys instead. Thompson, visibly frustrated, made a second attempt, only to have the same thing happen again.
Not one to give up easily, Thompson banged on the glass to get the man’s attention, clearly indicating that the puck was intended for the little girl, not the boys. With renewed determination, he made a final attempt, and this time, Lily finally got her cherished puck. CBC News shared this touching moment on their Twitter account, prompting Lily to recount her experience.
When asked how she felt watching others receive the puck instead of her, she said, “I felt devastated, sad. But I was happy for the boys; I just wanted it so much.” But when she finally had the puck in her hands? “I felt overjoyed. Really overjoyed,” she beamed, with a smile that lit up the arena.
Interestingly, some viewers initially defended the man, assuming he was merely giving pucks to his children. However, Lily’s mother clarified that this man was not her father and that she is an only child. In fact, she plays peewee hockey herself.
In a lovely twist, Capitals owner David Miller invited Lily and her family to sit along the glass for Game 5 of the series, as reported by USA Today. Although the Capitals lost that game, it’s clear that for Lily, the day was a resounding success.
