Connecting with Your Tech-Savvy Teen
Are your discussions with your teen met with blank stares, as if they’ve suddenly forgotten how to speak English? This was the first sign that the dynamics in our home had shifted. I found myself getting long, drawn-out “ugh” sounds, accompanied by eye rolls and rapid exits—often before I could finish my thoughts on grades, chores, or the benefits of a balanced life. All I wanted was to know what was for dinner.
“Hey, Google, what toppings should we order?”
Does this sound familiar? Do your kids seem lost in their screens at the dinner table? When you ask about their day, does it take them what feels like forever to respond? Is their focus solely on their devices, while meaningful conversations happen only in the digital realm?
If so, you might be sharing your space with a member of Generation Z.
Teenagers: Trailblazers or Aliens?
Every generation has faced this awkward phase. One moment, you’re watching a child play outside, and the next, it’s eight years later, and they seem to have returned from an epic journey, looking surprisingly fresh and vibrant while you’re left feeling worn out.
As Gen Z engages with their devices, they’re not just zoning out; they’re forging connections and unleashing their creativity through technology. It’s essential for us as parents to navigate this global digital landscape alongside them.
While we yearn for our children to acquire the same social skills we honed, it’s important to recognize that Gen Z is competitive, motivated, and values their independence. We might sound like our parents telling tales of VHS tapes and landlines, but it’s crucial to adapt to the evolving times—an adaptation that can be quite enlightening.
The challenge is helping them strike a balance between family time, social connections, and personal growth. So how do we engage Gen Z and bring them back into the real world, or do we even need to?
Explore Their Universe
Navigating this new realm together can make it easier to strike that balance. Here’s how you can connect with your tech-savvy teen:
- Do You Speak Their Language?
You’ll never connect with your child if you avoid technology—it’s part of their identity. Embrace it! Set personal tech goals, like mastering a new app each week. Consider taking a coding class together or watching tutorials on YouTube. By participating, you can model positive habits and open up communication in a language that resonates with both of you. - Transform Experiences into Digital Ventures.
Gen Z is capable of handling responsibilities, so let them channel their creativity while using their phones. Encourage them to document family events for those unable to attend or to share highlights from your vacation on social media. By trusting them with these tasks, you show appreciation for their skills and may even help them discover new passions. - Lead by Example.
Asking Gen Z to develop healthy online habits while neglecting your own is hypocritical. When monitoring their tech use, ensure you’re setting a positive example. Avoid mindlessly scrolling through social media and engage in activities you love, whether it’s sports or cooking. Research indicates that being present in the digital world alongside your child can significantly strengthen your bond. Whether it’s showcasing your gaming prowess or joining in on a TikTok trend, connecting through digital interests can help bridge the gap that technology can sometimes create. - Embrace Parenting 2.0.
It’s also vital to allow your children to have experiences without you. Consider enrolling them in summer camps where they can meet peers and develop life skills. While it’s tempting to swoop in and solve their problems, they need to learn to navigate challenges independently. Such experiences will help them adjust to future scenarios, like college life.
For those of us who didn’t grow up fluent in “digital,” we must accept that our Gen Z children see the world through a different lens. Different isn’t bad; it simply means we need to find ways to enter their universe and create opportunities for them to thrive. From my perspective, engaging with Gen Z has never felt more promising.
