Describing our family as a traveling circus might actually be an understatement. We are a household of four children, all under the age of three. No, this isn’t a blended family, and I’m certainly not overlooking any kids. It just appears that I have a knack for having twins—I seem to produce them in pairs. So let’s dive into the reality of my life with this lively crew.
Four Birthdays in One Day
First things first, all four of my kids share a birthday. Yes, you read that right—both sets of twins celebrate their special day on the same date. Four birthdays in one day? It’s as mind-boggling as it sounds.
Thanks to my partner, I’m lucky enough to be a stay-at-home mom, which means we don’t often see the outside world. On the rare occasions when I must transport my little ones, I pray for patience. Getting two toddlers and two infants into our van is about as graceful as an octopus on rollerblades.
It requires strategy, snacks, propped bottles, and copious amounts of coffee. And let’s not even talk about the frantic search for my car keys! I learned the hard way that the older twins should never be allowed to roam free in the van while I attempt to buckle in the babies. If they do, I risk being locked out, leading to an embarrassing “Parent of the Year” moment requiring a 911 call.
So, naturally, the older twins are banned from roaming the van, and I’ll have a funny story to share at their graduation.
The Shopping Adventure
Once we finally arrive at our destination—usually our local Walmart—I want to be quick about it. Why? Because I often look like I’ve just rolled out of bed. But let’s face it, there’s nothing quick about managing four children, except perhaps the initial act of conceiving them. Getting them out of the car involves as much maneuvering, bribery, and negotiation as getting them in.
My son stays close, helping push the babies in our double stroller, while my eldest daughter lags behind, lost in her own world and resisting my urgency. By the time we finish shopping, the kids are restless, my anxiety is at an all-time high, and the babies are wailing louder than ever. It never ceases to amaze me how fascinated strangers are with twins, and when they realize there are TWO sets of twins, it’s like I’m holding a ticket to a sideshow.
While I’m trying to manage my chaotic crew in the checkout line, a stranger might ask, “Are they both twins?” To which I could respond, “Actually, they are both triplets, but we left one at home.” Or my personal favorite: “Are your boy/girl twins identical?” “Absolutely! Right down to his penis and her vagina.”
And the stories I hear about other people’s twins? I’m sure they’re lovely, but I have my own set of twins to keep track of.
Returning Home
After we navigate through a barrage of questions and dodge the neighbors I’m too tired to chat with, we finally load everyone back into the van, drive home, and unload once again.
Upon returning to our home, it looks like a toy store was hit by a hurricane. I can barely take two steps without tripping over a toy or a child. Despite my best efforts, there are no classes on “How to Stay Sane and Keep a Clean Home with Two Sets of Twins.”
People often tell me, “I don’t know how you do it.” If I’m being honest, some days, I’m just as perplexed. But I manage. I’m always on my feet, with at least one baby on my hip and two toddlers in tow. My to-do list is a perpetual work in progress, and my laundry situation is a whole other story. My culinary skills may not impress Gordon Ramsay, but I can microwave a decent corn dog and snag a handful of cheese balls with one hand.
Bath Time and Bedtime
Bath time could easily be classified as an Olympic sport, and when bedtime arrives, the snuggles are the best part of my day. While my kids can put themselves to sleep, they are only little once, and that thought tugs at my heartstrings, keeping me by their side a bit longer.
If you could see me lying down with my four children sprawled across every inch, you’d likely think my hands are full. And they are, but that’s nothing compared to the immense love overflowing in my heart. With two sets of kisses, two sets of hugs, and four little ones to cherish, my life is a whirlwind of joy.
