In today’s fast-paced world, nurturing friendships can sometimes feel like a daunting task. Yet, the value of spending quality time with your girlfriends is immeasurable. I’m certain I’m not alone in my belief that MY GIRLFRIENDS ARE AMAZING. Throughout my life, I have gathered friends from various phases—elementary school, high school, college, and beyond. Each of them has played a pivotal role in my life, particularly during challenging times, such as my cancer diagnosis at 42.

Coordinating a simple dinner with friends often resembles a diplomatic summit. So organizing a girls’ weekend? That’s no small feat. After countless messages, we finally settled on a date and destination that fit four busy moms juggling nine kids. Miracles do happen!

I’ve been fortunate to share nearly 30 years of friendship with these incredible women. These are the kind of friends with whom you can enjoy doing absolutely nothing, yet still create some of your most cherished memories. This past weekend was no exception; we found ourselves laughing uncontrollably in our hotel room, reminiscing about our childhood antics. Who needs a workout when laughter can leave your stomach sore the next day?

Life is unpredictable. Friends enter our lives through various circumstances—sometimes simply by living in the same neighborhood or attending the same school. Other times, it’s a shared experience during pivotal moments, like navigating the complexities of being single when everyone else seems settled, or finding your footing as a new mom.

Somehow, the universe aligns to bring certain people into our lives when we need them most. Whether we met in school, at work, or through our children’s activities, these connections are often more profound than we realize at first. We choose the friends we keep in our lives based on how they impact us and how we support each other through thick and thin.

These friendships, especially those formed in childhood, are often the ones that stand the test of time. The hands you held to skip across the playground can also be the ones that offer comfort during moments of loss. The hugs you received when feeling excluded from social events are the same ones that bring solace during personal tragedies. The friends you confide in after heartbreak are often the same people you celebrate life’s milestones with.

As we grow, we cannot predict the joys and challenges that lie ahead. We don’t know how our friendships will evolve or what we will face together. However, it’s evident that we will need our girlfriends to help us navigate adolescence (both ours and, heaven help us, our children’s), career pressures, the rollercoaster of motherhood, and the intricacies of relationships.

My experience has reinforced the truth that having an incredible group of friends is a priceless gift. Whether you have one best friend or a close-knit group, these connections enhance our lives in countless ways. They are the ones with whom you have shared laughter that leaves you gasping for breath and tears streaming down your face.

After all, what’s a little laughter-induced pee between best friends?
