Every Child with ADHD Should Experience ‘Captain Underpants’ – Here’s Why

In the words of popular children’s author Dav Pilkey, “I prefer to think of it as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Delightfulness. Others may label it a disorder.” Pilkey, known for his beloved Captain Underpants series, was diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia in second grade, a time when he struggled with concentrating, sitting still, and adhering to classroom norms. His teachers often criticized him, and he frequently felt isolated in his educational environment.

Despite these challenges, Pilkey found solace in creating Captain Underpants comic books, which quickly became a hit among his peers. His talent for humor and creativity shone through, yet not everyone appreciated his art; one teacher even tore one of his creations in front of the class, insisting his comic books would lead nowhere. But Pilkey’s resilience kicked in, and, undeterred, he dove back into crafting new adventures for his superhero.

Fortunately, Pilkey’s parents were incredibly supportive of his passion for cartooning, disregarding the negative feedback he received from educators. They encouraged him to view his ADHD as a unique gift. Later in college, a professor recognized Pilkey’s potential and urged him to pursue a career as a children’s author. At age 31, he published Captain Underpants, which remains a favorite among children, including my own, even two decades later.

A Personal Journey with Reading

Speaking of my daughter, she is eight years old and had a strong aversion to reading before discovering Captain Underpants. Getting her to engage with her school reading was a struggle; she found it tedious and often became overwhelmed, especially with complex words. Many times, she would lose track of her reading, rehashing paragraphs without understanding them.

Then came the day Captain Underpants entered her life. Suddenly, my reluctant reader transformed. At the library, she eagerly chose a Captain Underpants book, and once home, she sprawled out on the couch, engrossed in the story. I watched in amazement as she read upside down and even turned the couch into a reading table. She devoured the book, laughing and smiling, rekindling her love for reading thanks to Pilkey’s whimsical imagination.

The Design of Pilkey’s Books

The design of Pilkey’s books caters perfectly to children like mine. The text is approachable, with short chapters and engaging illustrations on nearly every page. The books even include fun features like flip-o-rama, offering spontaneous breaks that kids enjoy without realizing it.

While the Captain Underpants series is celebrated for its humor—often on the potty side—what resonates most with me as a parent of an ADHDer are the relatable characters and the subtle messages embedded within the stories. George and Harold, the main characters, share the same traits of creativity, mischief, and intelligence as many kids with ADHD. Pilkey openly acknowledges their ADHD, portraying them as bright boys who simply struggle with boredom in school.

In one narrative twist, the antagonist, Professor Poopypants, despises humor and devises a machine to zap it from people’s minds. Yet, George and Harold’s humor remains intact, symbolizing the strength and vibrancy of their ADHD. This powerful message reinforces that ADHD is not something to erase but rather a vital part of what makes these children—like Pilkey—so imaginative and spirited.

Meeting Dav Pilkey

Recently, my family had the incredible opportunity to meet Dav Pilkey during his Supa-Epic Tour O’ Fun, celebrating 20 years of Captain Underpants and the release of his latest Dog Man book. Listening to him share his experiences with ADHD was inspiring; he truly embodies the positive potential of this condition. It’s crucial for our ADHD kids to have role models who celebrate ADHD as a gift, and Pilkey is undoubtedly one of the best.

I cherish the moment my daughter was able to express her admiration for Pilkey and his work, seeing her take pride in her own ADHD identity. Just like Pilkey, she is creative, intelligent, and destined for greatness.
