If you spent your childhood in the ’80s, you’re well aware that those years gifted us with some of the most iconic toys imaginable. Many of these treasures have not only stood the test of time but have also remained beloved by children today. Sure, we’ve seen some upgrades along the way—our Pound Puppies now come with extravagant carriers, and our medical kits are a far cry from the rudimentary versions we had. Nevertheless, the charm of these toys still resonates, and I’m excited to introduce a few of my all-time favorites to my kids this holiday season.
Alphie Robot
Who remembers Alphie? This innovative robot was a source of endless joy for me. Although I’m sure he has undergone a myriad of upgrades since his debut in 1978, he was a remarkable toy back then. I loved sliding cards into his belly to hear him talk.
Troll Dolls
Recently popularized by a movie, Troll Dolls have a rich history dating back to the early ’60s, when Thomas Dam crafted the first one for his daughter. I have fond memories of styling their wild hair and creating entire villages for them, often attaching them to my backpack.
Hot Wheels
Launched in 1968, Hot Wheels have maintained their popularity over the years. While I didn’t have a massive collection, I cherished the afternoons spent at a friend’s house, racing her elaborate tracks in her basement.
Lite Brite
I’m thinking of surprising my 6-year-old with a Lite Brite for Christmas—just don’t let her in on the secret! I adored creating colorful designs with mine, and I can’t wait to share that joy with her.
Pound Puppies
Remember how we used to collect Pound Puppies from McDonald’s? I can’t say I’ve eaten that many Chicken Nuggets since then! They may come with fancy carriers now, but they still hold a special place in my heart, and my kids love caring for their plush companions.
Easy Bake Oven
I always wanted an Easy Bake Oven, and it remains one of my biggest regrets. Ironically, I don’t even use my real oven much these days.
Care Bears
While there are now high-tech Care Bears that probably have more features than my phone, I loved my simple plush versions. They were just happy, cuddly bears.
Medical Kits
Take a look at today’s medical kits; they are far more sophisticated than what we had. I’m convinced my kids could perform life-saving procedures with these tools!
Fashion Plates
My older son has developed a passion for fashion design, thanks to Project Runway Junior. I gifted him a set of Fashion Plates recently, and they are still a hit. However, it would be nice to see some male fashion options included in the future.
See ‘n Say
This classic toy is a blast from the past. While it might drive you a little crazy if your child is obsessed with it, it’s a rite of passage for any kid.
Spirograph
I remember the magic of creating intricate designs with Spirograph. The ability to layer colors and see how fast you could create patterns was truly delightful.
Cabbage Patch Dolls
If you’re around my age, you’ll recall the Cabbage Patch craze. My very first doll was a hot commodity, and I still cherish the memories of that Christmas.
View-Master
Now rebranded as virtual reality glasses, the View-Master still brings back nostalgic memories of my childhood.
Tonka Trucks
You can’t go wrong with a sturdy Tonka Truck. They are perfect for little hands and can withstand some serious playtime.
My Little Pony
These colorful ponies have stood the test of time. Target seems to have an entire aisle dedicated to them, which speaks volumes about their lasting appeal.
Mr. Potato Head
My kids have found new ways to enjoy Mr. Potato Head—like bringing him into the bath! His timeless charm continues to entertain.
Simon Says
I adored Simon Says, and I’m thrilled my parents still have the original version, which still works! Just be prepared for some noise.
Rubik’s Cube
My son recently dove into the world of Rubik’s Cubes, inspired by countless YouTube videos. I remember struggling to solve mine without any guidance, which made it all the more challenging.
Rainbow Brite
I was head over heels for Rainbow Brite in my youth, even dressing as her for Halloween. No shame in my game!
Tinker Toys
While Tinker Toys can create a bit of a mess, they provide endless hours of creative building fun for kids who love to construct.
As you can see, if you grew up in the ’80s like I did, you’ll probably recognize many of these toys and feel a wave of nostalgia wash over you during the holiday season. Though they may not be flashy or overly complicated, these simple toys ignite imagination and creativity. We lived through that magic—now it’s time for our kids to experience it too.
