In nearly two decades of partnership, my spouse has stirred feelings in me that no one else ever has — including anger, frustration, and heartache. There have been moments when I’ve cried until there were no tears left, and times he has acted unfairly. Yet, he has also been my rock through heartbreak and loss, my greatest supporter when my self-belief waned, and the one who can make me laugh until I can barely breathe. Together, we’ve built a family and a life that we cherish deeply. He is an integral part of me, a piece that completes my existence.
Throughout our years together, we’ve intertwined like two saplings growing side by side, indistinguishable as they share the same roots. This is what marriage is about; it often resembles a challenging journey that you might not have chosen. However, it is also filled with illuminating moments that shine brightly enough to guide you through the inevitable darker times.
There will be periods — days, weeks, or even months — when you feel bored, dissatisfied, or downright unhappy, questioning where the magic of your fairy tale has gone. Reality doesn’t always align with the glamorous narratives depicted in films. Life can throw curveballs at us, causing stress that sometimes gets projected onto our partners. This behavior isn’t a reflection of our love; rather, it’s a testament to the closeness of our relationship, where we feel safe enough to reveal our less-than-perfect selves.
Every couple experiences disagreements — without exception. Even those seemingly perfect pairs you see on social media, presenting their love through saccharine posts and declarations of friendship. Disputes can arise from serious misjudgments that threaten the foundation of the relationship. But even during calmer times, we might find ourselves bickering over trivial matters like who’s responsible for picking up the kids from soccer or why the toilet paper roll was left empty. Arguments, both significant and minor, are simply part of sharing your life with someone and navigating differing opinions on how to manage a shared household.
If you found yourself in a work environment where your colleagues were abusive or toxic, you’d understand it was time to seek a healthier option. The same holds true for marriage. There are certainly valid reasons to consider ending a relationship. Yet, even in a fulfilling marriage that you cherish, there will be challenging days when you dread coming home. However, you push through because you recognize that it’s merely a rough patch, not a doomed relationship.
Marriage is a complex blend of beauty and occasional turmoil, with those difficult moments serving to fortify your bond. They become milestones of resilience that you can both reflect on with pride. You’re still together because you’ve put in the effort, nurturing your relationship even when it was on the brink of collapse. You could have chosen to give up, but instead, you held on, knowing that after the storm passes — and it always does — you’ll emerge stronger together.
