Dear Influential YouTubers: A Message from Parents

Dear YouTubers,

As a parent, I find myself spending an inordinate amount of time trying to get my children to listen, focus, and actually absorb what I’m saying. Unfortunately, I often feel like I’m talking to a brick wall — they seem to care more about watching paint dry than heeding my words.

Why should they listen to me? I brought them into this world, endured the physical toll of childbirth, and provide for their every need. Yet, it feels like they owe me nothing in return. Conversely, you — a total stranger on the internet — can capture their undivided attention using just a camera and a catchy title. It baffles me. They’ll sit through hours of your content, even if it’s as mundane as watching grass grow, especially if it features quirky capitalization and the word “challenge” thrown in, like “SuPeR DoG DooDLe ChAlLeNgE!” Just remember to speak with the same urgency as one would yell, “Look out, your hair is on fire!”

When I was a kid, if I found myself at a friend’s house watching them play video games, I would simply leave. It was boring! But my kids? They’re perfectly content being passive observers, slouched on the couch.

What’s even more frustrating is that you don’t have to do anything spectacular to keep them engaged. If left to their own devices, they would happily listen to an hour-long dissertation on the history of doilies. But when I try to engage them for even two minutes? Their eyes glaze over, and they start fidgeting, looking for an exit.

While we parents may not fully understand your captivating influence, we acknowledge it. This is why I’m reaching out to all content creators on behalf of parents everywhere whose kids are inexplicably enthralled by your videos. I propose a partnership. You’re chasing views, right? The more, the better?

If you could create videos that promote activities we repeatedly encourage, we would actively support our kids in watching your content. Imagine titles like “10 Fun Ways to Clean Your Room!” or “Epic Tooth-Brushing Showdown!” or even “Super Clean Plate Challenge!” Or how about surprise eggs filled with healthy treats like chewable vitamins or floss? Bonus points for wearing actual pants and a tidy shirt, because apparently, that’s a whole new concept for my kids.

Consider the number of views you’d accumulate if parents worldwide were actually endorsing the viewing of your videos (while still pretending to roll their eyes, of course). Now is your chance to harness your YouTube prowess for a greater good — for both you and us, and for the countless kids who would thrive with a little less nagging. You could usher in a new era of harmony in countless households while still making a profit. How does that sound for a challenge?

Sincerely,
Parents Everywhere
