Abbott’s Formula Production Facility Resumes Operations Following Flood Damage

Abbott’s production facility in Sturgis, Michigan, has reopened once again after facing significant challenges, including a bacterial contamination and subsequent flooding. The facility had initially closed in February 2022 when five infants became ill from cronobacter sakazakii and salmonella linked to the formula produced there, resulting in two tragic fatalities. This closure, combined with pandemic-related supply chain disruptions, contributed to a nationwide infant formula shortage, with out-of-stock rates reaching a staggering 43% in May.

After meeting the FDA’s requirements in a consent decree, Abbott managed to restart operations on June 4, focusing on the production of Elecare, a specialty formula designed for babies with severe food allergies. Unfortunately, just two weeks into production, the plant was forced to shut down again due to flooding caused by intense storms. On June 15, Abbott announced that they would be closing the facility to assess the damage and carry out necessary cleaning and sanitization.

Fortunately, no further disasters have followed, and the plant resumed production on July 1. Abbott confirmed the reopening and the recommencement of Elecare formula production. In the meantime, the White House’s ‘Operation Fly Formula’ initiative successfully imported 35 tons of hypoallergenic formula from Germany, and Abbott has also announced plans to bring in 1.1 million pounds of powdered infant formula from Spain. With any luck, parents will soon find store shelves stocked with various types of formula, allowing them to focus on what truly matters.
