Breastfeeding Mom Saves Pet Goose from Bald Eagle, Because Why Not?

When Caitlyn Roberts, a mother of three living in North Saanich, British Columbia, noticed a ruckus outside her window one morning while nursing her baby, she didn’t hesitate to spring into action. With her daughter, Mia, still latched on, Caitlyn dashed out the front door to rescue their pet goose, Gus, from the talons of a bald eagle. Just another day in the life of a multitasking mom.

Though Caitlyn probably didn’t think about the doorbell camera capturing her daring rescue, the footage quickly went viral after her husband shared it online. The clip even caught the attention of The Late Show With Seth Meyers, which deemed it “The Kind of Story We Need Right Now.” And honestly, it certainly is.

At just 30 years old, Caitlyn is a busy mom to Oliver, 9, and Ella, 3, in addition to baby Mia, now 6 months old. In addition to juggling her children, she also tends to the family’s chickens and Gus, who plays a crucial role in protecting the flock. “Gus comes to the front door whenever there’s trouble,” Caitlyn shared during an interview. “He’s quite the vigilant goose.”

Caitlyn immediately sensed something was off. “Just like mothers can distinguish different cries from their babies, I can recognize the various honks of my goose.” She explained how she initially intended to peek out the window but ended up throwing open the door just in time to see the eagle swoop down. “There was no time to put Mia down,” she recounted.

While this wasn’t Caitlyn’s first time chasing off an animal, she typically doesn’t do so while breastfeeding. “Breastfeeding is a full-time job,” she noted. “If you have other kids, it’s all about juggling.” Clearly, this instinctive response came naturally to her.

Caitlyn has shared on social media that although she struggled to breastfeed her first two children, she worked diligently to establish a nursing relationship with Mia. “When you want something so badly and your body just doesn’t cooperate, it’s heartbreaking,” she explained. With Mia, however, Caitlyn made sure she prepared for success, with the help of a naturopath, oat milk, bone broth, and the medication domperidone, which can aid in milk production.

It looks like baby Mia has a strong latch, too!
