Comedian and author Iliza Shlesinger shares her candid thoughts on becoming a mother, revealing that her journey has been quite different from her expectations. “I imagined it would be a relaxing time, where we’d just chat about life, but she mostly sleeps,” Iliza jokes about her baby daughter, whom she welcomed with husband, chef and author Noah Galuten, in January. Their daughter, Luna Mae, has already demonstrated her diva tendencies by sleeping through a recent family barbecue.

At 39 years old, Iliza is currently on her Back in Action comedy tour while preparing for her sixth Netflix special and her upcoming book, All Things Aside, set to release this fall. During our conversation on a lovely patio in the hills of Los Angeles, she reflects on the challenges of motherhood and the importance of compassion in parenting.

How Was Your Pregnancy?

Iliza describes her pregnancy as a positive experience, filled with energy and vitality. “I was even touring at seven months pregnant, feeling great,” she admits. On the day she went to the hospital for an induction, she was out hiking, trying to coax her baby into making an appearance.

And What About Labor?

Her labor experience took an unexpected turn when the medical staff introduced a Foley balloon to assist with dilation. “It felt like medieval torture,” she recalls. After enduring intense discomfort, she opted for a more patient approach, choosing to watch Netflix until she was ready to deliver. When the moment finally arrived, she felt a rush of joy as she held Luna for the first time, overwhelmed by emotion.

Feeding Decisions

Iliza breastfed Luna for nearly four months and supplemented with formula, addressing the stigma surrounding formula use. “I think many moms use formula but don’t speak about it. There’s no shame in how you choose to feed your child,” she asserts, emphasizing the importance of removing judgment from motherhood.

Judgment in Motherhood

The comedian notes the overwhelming scrutiny faced by parents, especially mothers, in today’s society. “It’s crazy how many products you’re told you need, all with bizarre names,” she laughs. Iliza believes that the anxiety surrounding parenting stems from a place of love and a desire to do right by one’s child.

Nighttime Duties

Though she has a full-time nanny to assist, she enjoys spending time with Luna during the day and is unbothered by diaper changes. “I think baby poop is beautiful!” she quips, showcasing her lighthearted approach to motherhood.

First Tastes and Future Aspirations

When asked about introducing solid foods, she shares a humorous anecdote about letting Luna try mashed potatoes and even a lemon. “Was it mean? Yes. But it was hilarious to see her reaction!”

Reflecting on her parenting philosophy, Iliza hopes to instill confidence and resilience in Luna. “I want her to walk into any room feeling she belongs. If she wants to pursue show business, that’s fine, but I’ll encourage her to carve her own path.”

She also discusses the need for compassion, particularly towards those with differing views. “While I have strong beliefs, I believe in allowing women to make their own choices in parenting.”
