I’m Divorced, Yet I Still Honor My Ex-Husband on Father’s Day

A Great Dad

Though my marriage ended, I still find it essential to celebrate my ex-husband on Father’s Day. No matter our past, he is a wonderful father, and acknowledging that is important to me.

With Father’s Day approaching, I’ve reminded my teens to pick out a few gifts for their dad. Sure, they could handle it on their own—my oldest can drive, and they all have their own money. However, I want to ensure they truly show their appreciation.

It’s been over five years since their father and I separated, but that doesn’t change the fact that he’s an incredible dad. He was there when I took countless pregnancy tests and shared in the excitement of each child’s gender reveal. We even made a tradition of buying their first outfit together, followed by a celebratory lunch. He attended every doctor’s appointment, helped with feeding and diaper changes, and comforted them during sleepless nights. Even after our divorce, we’ve managed to co-parent effectively. He consistently prioritizes their happiness and plans memorable outings, even doing things he doesn’t particularly enjoy, like long shopping trips at the mall. He has dropped his own plans just to be there for the kids, proving his commitment as a father.

I feel fortunate that we maintain a positive relationship. Regardless of how I view him as a partner, he absolutely deserves recognition as a dad. It’s my responsibility to ensure my kids understand the significance of this day and how lucky they are to have him.

With busy lives, my teens often overlook occasions like Father’s Day. So, I remind them weeks in advance to participate and consider their dad’s preferences without grumbling. I often have to emphasize that the day is about him. While I hear the familiar “We know, Mom,” accompanied by eye rolls, I don’t let their teenage snark deter me from reiterating the importance of the day as I drop them off for their Father’s Day weekend.

Father’s Day serves as a reminder to my kids of all that their dad has done for them over the years. Teens can sometimes be self-absorbed, focusing primarily on their own experiences, but I want to encourage them to step outside of that mindset.

I could easily let them handle Father’s Day on their own and just hope for the best since they’re older now. However, this day is about showing appreciation for their dad, putting their phones down, and engaging in activities he enjoys, like hiking. Celebrating him for just one day hardly compares to the countless ways he has supported them throughout their lives.

Despite not being married anymore, he will always be their father, and it’s vital that my children make him feel cherished on Father’s Day.
