Let’s be honest: we all have moments of judgment. Whether we admit it or not, many of us have been that sanctimonious mom, casting silent judgments on others. Some manage to keep their thoughts to themselves, while others are less discreet. I’ve often found myself asking:
- What kind of mom allows her kids seven hours of screentime?
- What kind of mom leaves her children home alone for grocery shopping?
- What kind of mom actually looks forward to bedtime?
Even when I know I’m doing my best, I can be my own harshest critic. We all fall into this trap, judging ourselves and others alike, while proclaiming we’d never do such a thing.
Years ago, I found myself in a Target dressing room, overhearing a mom who was clearly at her wit’s end. Instead of whisper-yelling through clenched teeth like I had done in the past, she was beyond caring. I looked at my own sweet girls and felt smugly superior, judging her behavior. But now that my daughters are older and strong-willed, I completely understand her struggle. She was on a path of frustration that many of us know too well. Perhaps she collected herself afterwards, apologized, and treated her kids to ice cream on the way home. Or maybe she was just done for the day.
Every day as a parent presents new challenges. My judgment of that mom was unfair, and it’s a reminder that we all have tough moments. Instead of criticizing others, we should recognize that our judgments should lead to accountability rather than shame. Parenting is not a one-size-fits-all approach, and what works for one family might not work for another.
I apologize to all the moms I’ve unfairly judged. You deserve kindness and understanding in the face of daily challenges. The next time that negative inner voice chimes in, I’ll strive to listen to compassion instead, because we are all navigating this unpredictable journey of motherhood together.
