It’s no surprise that welcoming a new baby into your life often leads to countless sleepless nights. Even the moments we do manage to sleep are rarely as restful as they were pre-parenthood. The constant interruptions—be it a misplaced pacifier, an itchy sock, a midnight hug request, or the anxiety when they start driving—keep us on high alert.

For those curious to quantify just how much sleep has been sacrificed over the years, there’s the Lost Sleep Calculator created by the UK home brand Hillarys. This tool estimates the amount of sleep parents lose based on the ages of their children.

Simply enter your children’s ages, hit the “Calculate my lost sleep” button, and voilà! The calculator reveals the total hours lost, shedding light on why we often feel irritable and exhausted. In addition to sleep loss, it tracks the number of diapers changed, bedtime stories read, and lullabies sung—useful information for those times when you want to engage in friendly banter with your partner.

After trying the calculator for myself, I discovered that I’ve lost a staggering 9,990 hours of sleep with my three kids. That translates to about 416 days—or roughly 14 months. Now, I find myself even more tired than before knowing this information. But at least I can rationalize the splurge on that expensive eye cream!

The calculator also shares amusing anecdotes about the bizarre things sleep-deprived parents have done. According to Hillarys, about one in four parents have mistakenly put their mobile phone in the refrigerator, while one in nine have cradled their cat, thinking it was their baby.

“Some parents are lucky enough to have a child who sleeps soundly through the night—it’s the dream for many. Unfortunately, for most, bedtime can turn into a battle, as kids often resist going to sleep and then wake up multiple times throughout the night,” says Karen Fields, a spokesperson for Hillarys. “Regardless of whether you’ve lost months or even years of sleep, I think we can all agree that our children are worth it.”

I’ve lost 14 months of sleep, and the end seems nowhere in sight, Karen! If nothing else, this calculator gives parents of older children the chance to feel superior to their newer parent friends. “Oh, you think you’re tired? I’ll raise you 6,000 lost hours,” is a sentiment many of us can relate to.
