Amerie Jo Garza, the young victim of the Uvalde school shooting, has been recognized posthumously with a prestigious award from the Girl Scouts. The 10-year-old received the bronze cross, which honors individuals who risk their lives to save others.
May was meant to be a month of joy for Amerie, marking her tenth birthday on the 10th, participating in a bridging ceremony for Junior Girl Scouts, and recently achieving a spot on the A-B honor roll at Robb Elementary School. Tragically, just after the school’s awards presentation, she was fatally shot while using her new birthday gift, a cell phone, to call 911 in an effort to help her classmates. She lost her life alongside 18 other children and two teachers, Eva Mireles and Irma Garcia.
In recognition of her bravery, the Girl Scouts of the USA awarded Amerie the bronze cross, an honor given “for saving or attempting to save a life at the risk of the Girl Scout’s own life,” as stated by the Girl Scouts of Southwest Texas. “Amerie did all she could to save the lives of her classmates and teachers,” the organization expressed on Twitter. They also honored her with a Presentation of Colors at her funeral services.
Those who knew Amerie described her as a caring older sister, always remembering to kiss her little brother before school, and a protector of friends. Her cousin shared that Amerie would stand up for her younger relative when she was bullied.
During her visitation and funeral at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Uvalde, mourners brought purple flowers and wore purple, Amerie’s favorite color. She was a spirited child who enjoyed swimming and drawing, had a dislike for dresses, and had aspirations of becoming an art teacher.
