In a world filled with challenges, Tom Hanks—often referred to as America’s Dad—stepping into the role of Geppetto in Disney’s live-action adaptation of Pinocchio is a much-needed beacon of hope. Set to stream on Disney+ starting September 8, the film features Hanks as the woodworker who wishes for his puppet, Pinocchio, to come to life as his son.

The teaser trailer, released during Good Morning America, opens with Geppetto diligently working on his creation—a wooden puppet. He then recites the heartfelt incantation, “Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight, I wish I may, I wish I might, have the wish I wish tonight,” while gazing at a star outside his window. The audience is also introduced to Jiminy Cricket, voiced by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who cleverly evades a hungry seagull, along with the enchanting Blue Fairy, portrayed by Cynthia Erivo, and glimpses of the menacing Coachman, played by Luke Evans, who oversees the notorious Pleasure Island.

While the trailer does not showcase the frightening transformation scenes of boys turning into donkeys, Evans has hinted that his portrayal of the Coachman will be a significant enhancement from the animated version. “Things are not going to be the same as they were in the animation. The storyline is very, very similar, but there were some characters that [director Robert Zemeckis] was able to dramatically enhance, and the Coachman is one of those,” Evans noted on the D23 Inside Disney podcast. He teased that his character is far from ordinary: “He isn’t just the average human being… He’s a very unusual creature. He’s rather terrifying. If you think Gaston is scary, wait until you meet the Coachman!”

Pinocchio will be available for streaming on September 8, 2022, in celebration of Disney+ Day 2022. For those who wish to revisit the classic animated film (including all its spine-chilling donkey scenes), it’s currently available on the platform.
