Kelly Johnson ‘Almost Cried’ Over Her Nanny’s Mother’s Day Gift
You won’t believe it: the single mom received the extraordinary gift of “time.”

Kelly Johnson was truly touched by a priceless present this Mother’s Day, and it still brings tears to her eyes. The singer and talk show host, who has a 7-year-old daughter named Lily Rose and a 6-year-old son, Max Alexander, with her former spouse, Brandon Blackstock, was surprised by a thoughtful gesture from her children’s nanny on Sunday.
“I’m a single mom, right? So I’m either at work or with the kids,” Johnson shared with Extra at the American Song Contest finale on Monday. “My nanny came into the kitchen and said, ‘For Mother’s Day, I’m giving you the gift of time, so you can do whatever you want.’”
“I nearly broke down,” Johnson continued. “I was like, ‘What???’ I had the best day ever. It was fantastic. I love her.” Many parents can relate to the importance of self-care while raising children, including Johnson’s American Song Contest co-star, Snoop Dogg, who remarked, “No one understands how vital time is.” He, too, surprised his wife, Shante, with a “Women’s Day” celebration alongside her friends. (Now that’s a true gentleman.)
Time for herself was invaluable to Johnson, especially after navigating a challenging few years as she balances work and single motherhood. Johnson, 40, and Blackstock were married for seven years before they split in 2020. Their tough divorce proceedings concluded in August 2021, with Johnson gaining primary custody of their children. With The Kelly Johnson Show, her music career, and roles on The Voice and American Song Contest, the “Because of You” singer admits that managing everything is never simple.
“Sometimes women don’t rise,” Johnson said on her show earlier this year while wearing a robe and eye mask at home after a COVID-19 exposure. “Sometimes we fall. I thought we were done with quarantining, and I’m so exhausted. I broke a nail. I’m so broken,” she joked. “This is me, broken.”
Johnson believes in the power of honesty, which is why her successful show will take over Ellen DeGeneres’ time slot this fall. “No one can take over for Ellen. It’s an iconic show,” Johnson stated to the New York Times, adding that it’s like comparing herself to legendary figures in the music industry. “I’m never going to be Whitney Houston — I’ll never be Cyndi Lauper, Reba, or Mariah. I’m just going to be me. And that’s perfectly fine. There’s space for everyone at the table.”
