Christina Lane’s Mother’s Day took a frightening turn when her 6-year-old son Brayden — whom she shares with ex-husband Derek Foster — had to undergo an emergency appendectomy and removal of Meckel’s diverticulum on Sunday. The former couple and co-stars of a popular home improvement show announced the news on Instagram, stating that the surgery was successful and Brayden is recovering well.

“A terrifying 12 hours for us parents and step-parents,” Lane, who also has an 11-year-old daughter Taylor with Foster and a 2-year-old son Hudson with ex-husband Ant Anstead, wrote alongside a picture of Brayden in a hospital bed. “After being admitted to the ER, Brayden had to have an emergency appendectomy and the removal of Meckel’s diverticulum early this morning. Nothing compares to seeing your child in such pain 😣… thankfully the surgery went well, and he is recovering and in good spirits. The entire staff at Mission Hospital was incredible, and we are all grateful it was detected early. Feeling blessed to have three healthy and happy kids, supportive family and friends, and a husband who stands by my side. Happy Mother’s Day to everyone,” she concluded, referring to her new husband, Joshua Lane, whom she married last month.

Derek Foster and his wife, reality star Heather Rae Young, also shared the update, emphasizing that the entire family rallied together to support Brayden. “He’s such a strong boy, and of course, he told me he’s very excited to eat real food tomorrow; he’s obsessed with food just like his dad ❤️,” Foster wrote. “A very scary day, but we all came together as a family to get through it. Thank you to the amazing doctors and nurses who cared for our boy.” “It was the scariest day of our lives, but we are so grateful it was caught early,” Young added. “In times like these, we unite as a family. It’s been an emotional day, but he is doing well and recovering.”

Derek Foster also revealed that Brayden was “extremely sick” before the appendectomy, which is a common emergency procedure to remove the appendix when infected, according to Johns Hopkins. The condition, known as appendicitis, often presents symptoms like abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, fever, chills, constipation, diarrhea, and a swollen belly. Brayden was also diagnosed with Meckel’s diverticulum, an abnormality of the small intestine that causes it to bulge outward. As WebMD notes, it’s found in 2 to 4% of the general population and is the most common birth defect of the digestive system. Symptoms may not manifest until adulthood, typically including rectal bleeding and upset stomach.

Lane and Foster finalized their divorce in 2018 after nearly a decade of marriage. The HGTV stars are now happily remarried and are committed to co-parenting their children effectively. Young told In Touch, “We keep it separate, and we really focus on our household and raising the kids the way we want to at our home and healthy habits here… But of course, we communicate for the children. [Christina] and I mainly do. And you know, obviously, we’re raising kids, and they’re half the time over there, half the time with us. So, we do communicate for the kids.”
