I Wanted a Daughter After Two Sons, and I’m Convinced I Made It Happen

I know it sounds a bit out there, but trust me, I believe I played a role in this outcome.

When my boys were three and one, my partner and I decided it was time to try for baby number three. With our first two, we let fate decide whether we’d have a girl or a boy. I tracked my cycle, and we did the deed during the optimal eight-day window, resulting in our rambunctious duo of boys. But after three years of trucks and cargo shorts, I was ready to bring some balance to our family. It was time to welcome a girl into the mix. And yes, I’m convinced I made it happen.

I kicked off my quest with some serious online research, diving deep into articles and even reading “How To Choose The Sex Of Your Baby” cover to cover. I took notes on my phone and crafted a detailed plan, complete with bullet points and emojis. Then, I set it into action.

The first step was all about creating the right environment to attract the desired “clients” — in this case, X-chromosome sperm. Some studies suggest that increasing the acidity of the vaginal environment can enhance the chances of conceiving a girl. I’m no scientist, but I was intrigued enough to give it a shot.

So, I started drinking a lot of cranberry juice — enough to give myself a week of mouth sores. Feeling unsure if that would suffice, I decided to take matters into my own hands. Ignoring all warnings, I used a recycled bottle to introduce freshly squeezed lemon juice into my vagina. In hindsight, that was probably a bit extreme, but thankfully, it didn’t lead to any infections. And believe it or not, it seemed to work.

Next, I marked my calendar and created a much more focused romantic window than usual. The theory here is that female sperm swim slower but live longer. By having intercourse before ovulation, I aimed to let those speedy male sperm die off, allowing the slower female sperm a better chance. I had (totally spontaneous and relaxed) sex for four days straight, stopping just before ovulation. If you do nothing else, I recommend this strategy.

To further my odds, I positioned myself in a way that was said to be favorable for female conception. I read various theories about sperm trajectory, and many claimed that women on top had the best odds. Luckily for my husband, I bought into this theory and went along with it. Thankfully, I didn’t have to read the fine print on enthusiasm, so I could put in minimal effort while still achieving results.

Fast forward four and a half years, and I now have a delightful little girl running around in her frayed tutus, cracking jokes, and calling me a “ding bat.” If you’re also hoping to add a spirited and unique daughter to your family, I hope this gives you some ideas. Like they say, when life gives you lemons…
