Recently, Florida’s Department of Education shared four excerpts from textbooks that were rejected due to content they considered inappropriate, such as critical race theory and other related subjects.

According to a report, 41% of the textbooks submitted by publishers were turned down. Initially, there was no transparency regarding the examples of the rejected material, leading to public outcry. However, last Friday, the department provided four instances of the “prohibited” content.

These examples were shared with the disclaimer that they were sourced from public submissions and do not represent the complete range of feedback received. One of the excerpts includes a bar graph illustrating levels of Implicit Association, which evaluates racial bias. Another excerpt discusses that “over 2 million individuals have assessed their racial bias through an online Implicit Association Test.”

Another rejected section highlights a learning objective stating that “students develop social awareness as they practice empathizing with their peers.” The fourth example, which has a redacted term, aims to foster student agency by concentrating on their social and emotional learning.

The state has not disclosed which specific textbooks were involved or provided additional context for these examples. In June 2021, the Florida Board of Education passed an amendment prohibiting the teaching of critical race theory, defined by the department as the notion that racism is deeply embedded in American society and legal systems to maintain white supremacy.

This movement has gained traction, with states like Missouri, Idaho, and Tennessee adopting similar legislation. As of now, 35 states have enacted or proposed laws limiting the teaching of critical race theory. Notably, only one publisher, Accelerate Learning, has received approval from Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Department of Education for K-5 math materials. This Texas-based publisher was acquired by the Carlyle Group in 2018, when Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin was co-CEO. Youngkin’s first act as governor involved signing an executive order to eliminate the use of “inherently divisive concepts,” similar to DeSantis’ “Stop WOKE Act.”
