My son finished high school last year and chose to dive into a career in the trades instead of heading to college. He rises early and often puts in 10-12 hour days. When extra work comes up on weekends, he takes it. He’s driven and dreams of starting his own business one day.

In our state, recreational cannabis is legal, although he isn’t of legal age to smoke it. I remind him of that fact often, which is about all I can do. Teens understand the legal boundaries regarding drinking but often go ahead anyway, and as parents, there’s a limit to how much we can control.
He Doesn’t Drink
In my view, drinking poses far more risks than smoking weed. I drank heavily at my son’s age, and it’s almost unbelievable that I’m still here. He doesn’t like the taste of alcohol, how it makes him feel, or its effects on his body. If he can’t wake up early to work and hit the gym, he’s not himself. Given the choice, I’d much prefer my children to smoke cannabis rather than drink.
He’s Honest and Respectful
No parent wants to see their child smoking, but if I constantly searched him, demanded to know where he got it, or imposed strict punishments, he wouldn’t feel comfortable being honest with me.
We’ve come to a mutual understanding: he doesn’t smoke in the house, but if he chooses to, he can step outside for a few puffs. This arrangement allows him to avoid sneaking around or driving under the influence. It’s a compromise that suits us both.
He’s Driven
My son rarely misses work unless he’s unwell, assists me with household tasks, and is highly self-sufficient. He smokes weed to unwind once a week or so, and it doesn’t disrupt his daily routine. He’s not lazing around the house all day with the munchies.
As parents, we have to pick our battles wisely. I wasn’t thrilled when I first discovered he was smoking, but I have faith in him. He’s nearing 19 and will soon be moving out, so I must grant him the space and freedom to make his own choices.
Cannabis helps many people manage their stress, and I know he won’t stop just because I disapprove. I choose not to conflict with him over this issue. Instead, I want to cherish our remaining time together before he leaves home, and if he wants to smoke, that’s his prerogative.
