A Ukrainian mother, Oksana Svitlana, recently shared a deeply moving story about her escape from war-torn Kyiv, revealing that she wrote vital contact information on her 2-year-old daughter Sofia’s back. Her intention was to ensure that if anything happened to her or her husband, Sofia might still be able to find help. “I thought, if we didn’t make it, I wanted her to have a chance,” Svitlana explained in an interview with a local news outlet.

As the invasion intensified, Svitlana and her family decided to leave Kyiv, hearing bombs in the distance as she played with Sofia. They packed their car and headed toward Moldova and eventually to southern France, where they currently seek refuge. Before departing, Svitlana wrote Sofia’s contact details on her back, which appeared to Sofia as a fun craft project. Svitlana is grateful her daughter won’t remember much of the ordeal, particularly the painful goodbyes to family left behind in Ukraine. During their journey, Sofia repeatedly asked for her grandmother, who later managed to escape as well.

“I want everyone to know that Sofia and I are safe,” Svitlana shared on Instagram alongside a cheerful photo of Sofia playing with flowers. “We crossed the border successfully and are now in southern France 🇫🇷. We are grateful to the volunteers who have offered us shelter… Thank you to the people of Poland 🇵🇱 for your invaluable support and kindness. Your help is what keeps us going.”
