New Research Finds High Rates of Bullying Among Children With ADHD

A recent study featured in the Journal of Attention Disorders reveals that nearly 50% of children diagnosed with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) experience bullying, a figure that is more than twice that of their neurotypical counterparts. The research indicates that these children are also twice as likely to engage in bullying behavior themselves.

The study analyzed data from the 2016-2017 National Survey of Children’s Health (NSCH) focusing on children aged 6 to 17 with ADHD. It examined correlations between parent-reported instances of bullying, demographic factors, family circumstances, and children’s behaviors. Among those with ADHD, 46.9% reported being victims of bullying, while 16.2% admitted to bullying others.

Several risk factors for increased victimization include family financial difficulties, developmental delays, challenges in forming friendships, and negative school reports. Parents noted that children struggling to make friends faced higher rates of bullying. Factors that contributed to being a bully included being male, receiving government assistance, low school engagement, friendship difficulties, and issues with anger management—arguing was the most significant predictor of bullying behavior.

This study aligns with previous research from November 2020, which found that children with ADHD are up to 17 times more likely to be both bullies and victims compared to their neurotypical peers, and 3.7 times more likely to be solely victims. Children with other neurodevelopmental disorders, like Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), also show elevated rates of bullying.
